I'll be honest I've never been interested in Polo's since the latest one. Fancied a Golf but didn't want the price tag for a tiny smidge more power and torque (and more weight) and the Polo seemed like the better choice in that respect.

It's basically Golf sized now. Almost identical inside (and apparantly on the outside according to the huge number of friends and randomers that thought it was a Golf) has 5 doors and is to all intents and purposes a cut price Golf

Good to see the issues don't effect how it drives, but I would rather have something more affective!laugh

I just hate to see our language abused (like the Polo may possibly have been?)

Back in the mid-90s I bought a 1979 1.6 Golf GTi as a stop-gap as I thought I couldn't go wrong with one of those - but I did! It wouldn't start when hot, the clutch cable wanted to move to the inside of the bulkhead, the brakes were mostly missing - if only everything was as reliable as a Volkswagen! Yeah, right!

For the money I'd definitely say it's worth a go! Rare and quite good fun, much better value than the equivalent Lupo GTI.

I'd resisted on the 'other' thread. But as PoloJoe has waded in here with his bks I'll have to say my tuppence. Fact is the Polo GTI has always been st. Engineered to be st to prevent taking sales from the Golf.

I was looking round for a cheap company car to claim some allowance back after a company Edition 30 went back a few years ago. So got a 6R GTI thinking it was a cut price Golf GTI. It wasn't. I couldn't go anywhere fast, there was grip, but the st suspension made it unsettled and bouncy all over the road at all speeds. Within 1 month of taking delivery I found a lady work colleague who liked the look of it, so I palmed it off on her and got a R56 Cooper S. The MINI would run rings round it, that's a properly engineered car.

I was just looking round for a 5-door car for my wife, test drove the facelift and nothing has changed, even with the crap 'adaptive' dampers fitted.

Wow I live in the country and the car never bounces around anywhere so I'm not sure what car you test drove.

On the test drive I even purposefully asked to drive the car on a crap potholey road in sports mode and it was still more comfy than the previous Clio 172 so I don't understand that last post.

I like the car so I'm not really too fussed what anyone thinks of it. I get on with it and if other people don't then great. I just won't pander along to comments that I know to be untrue

Again Joe?

The fact that you just wont let this go tells me all I need to know. Deep down, behind the bravado and boorish droning you know as well as the rest of us do; youve bought the wrong car. No one buys them for a reason.

Believe what you like I'm really not bothered. Fact is out of all the car I shortlisted I picked the best one for me and all I'm getting is constant BS saying it's terrible blah blah when I just know it isn't.

laugh

You bought a car circa 16 years old with, likely, an unknown History in terms of how it was driven and expected it to be reliable? Then, because it wasn't you tarnish the entire Marque?

My first car was a Toyota when Toyota was deemed to be ultra-reliable and it was a mess at only 5 years old!

I had to hit the alternator with a piece of timber when it was hot to get it to start. It was knackered in so many ways it was a complete joke - if it wasn't my first car and the associated joy that comes from simply owning a car the first time, I would've been very upset. But possibly wrongly so.

Why? Car Manufacturers aren't in the business of worrying much about second-hand car buyers and they want new car buyers to replace once their warranties are out of date. So an out-of-warranty car is a risk and shouldn't be expected to be trouble-free. If you are lucky enough to experience such a vehicle then that is wonderful but shouldn't be expected.

You know its getting desperate when he points out the "sport" button, don't need one in my car, push fast pedal down, car goes fast, take foot off fast pedal, car slows down.

It should be named "20 desperate ways to try to convince yourself you bought the right car" lol
