RE: Renault Clio R.S.16 - full story
Discussion
Looks like a good concept, if they follow the Megane RS route and not the Clio route, it will need to be very special for £40k.
That said, there are cars out there that may suit others better and for less cash, you will really need to be a Renault die hard (or serious french car enthusiast) to get one.
Good luck to Renault if they produce them

Thanks for the nicely detailed background story! Most informative write up by far...
Really hope they will release it, sounds like owners will have some fun and from a PR perspective IMO the exercise is worthwhile. It's cars like this that will be talked about for years . Also noteworthy for a 'concept' -- actually seem to have taken the time to make it drive well. Doubt they would have bothered much for just a Monaco show piece.
And for those think this is a bit on the expensive side: the exercise also outlines what great value the Megane RS is.

True, but the Clio V6 didn't actually get all that much of a warm welcome at the time, snappy on the limit and not actually all *that* fast for the money. Time has been very kind to it.
The original V6 230 phase 1 perhaps -though it was still more special than anything remotely the same price at the time - but the V6 255 phase 2 got rave reviews even compared to other extreme performance cars because there is more to providing a great performance car than just how fast it is as some manufacturers are finally realising. A paddle shift auto might be a few tenths quicker but if you don't want the convenience of it plenty of people would still rather the interaction of a manual as Renault UK have found out.Press reviews included in EVO issue 57 a group test with a TVR350C, EVO VIII FQ-300 and VX220 Turbo had them all rated 5 star cars but the Clio won the final verdict with "It feels as special and charismatic as any car we can think of under £40k. The Clio V6 has come good"
In their COTY issue 63 the Clio caused an even bigger upset by coming 3rd to the winning 911 GT3 and Gallardo, but ahead of the Ferrari 360 C Stradale, Noble GTO , BMW M3 CSL, Impreza STi spec C, Continental GT etc.
This caused a massive row with Ferrari and they banned EVO for years putting their cars in any group tests meaning they had to get customer cars (which caused more problems with Ferrari of course who like to control the media as much as possible)
EVO then ran a long termer and John Barker said it was the best car he had ever run.

Well good for them. Sounds like a real cracker and clearly Renault have their mojo back.
No doubt PH Porschar club will be banging on about Boxters and that Reanult is not a real brand.
However they seem to have made a really fun and fast car to drive. It also looks sufficiently Gallic as well.
Not cheap but....

The layout is of a front engined, turbo powered FWD hatch,
The Clio V6 had 6 cylinders for a start, while 6 cylinders in a hatch may have been done before it was not common, then there was the position of the engine etc it was a hot hatch very unlike any other
This looks like it's going to be an accomplished motor but it's not fundamentally different to what's been and gone before

why no mid engined cilo this time...
Cost probably. And possibly conflict with that alpine thing that popped up a while agoGiven that everyone seems horrified at the prospect of a largely bespoke, low volume car costing roughly the same as an optioned up golf I can imagine they dismissed the idea pretty early on.
I want one of these a lot but since I can't afford one I'll drive my megane around for a couple more years and then build my own by transplanting the engine into a 197 shell.
What is the point of displaying old technology with the new Megane due for release soon? This or a vastly superior cheaper Focus RS hmm??? Never liked the fussy looks of the latest Clio and paddle only shift. Be better keeping the turbo 1.6 remapped, stripping interior, ditching paddleshift, flaring the arches and selling for 15k.

I don't get this. Why should it be £20k when something like a FFRS is £30k?
Remember PH has essentially become a consumer forum, a car's mumsnet if you like, not a driving enthusiast's forum. Always a good reason not to buy a car and the permanent need to criticise everything, however irrational (or non-existent) the thought process is.leonintegra36 said:

What are you on about? Vastly superior Focus? I don't think you have driven this Clio have you?And what has the level of tech got to do with anything?

It's smaller than a fking Focus so has to be cheaper. It's a Renault so it will break down etc.
Renault have a better hot hatch reputation than anyone. Full stop. Better than Ford. Better than VW and better than Peugeot.
So if they charge a premium, good luck to them. They are the Porsche RS of the hot hatch world.

At £20k maybe. At £40k no chance.
They really ruined the looks of the clio after the 197/200.

What new r&d technology has this got? A bigger off the shelf engine, suspension, wheels and bodykit and less seats. All other really hot hatches have that and more (except they let you keep the seats).
So OK, maybe it should be £25k or if its a very very limited edition £30k but certainly not £40k.
Do you really think its worth £40k????!!!????

The only thing that is irrational is this being worth £40k. Do you honestly think its worth that?Let me guess what you drive.......
Do you think this is worth twice what your megane cost?? Your megane is just half of this car is it?

Because the FRS is a class above which is fully equipped with all the toys, newfangled awd and 350bhp.

Whilst it's a class above size-wise, my guess would be that this little Clio will at least match the Focus in the performance stakes. Plus, just look at it - it looks fantastic i.e. a little bit mental. What new r&d technology has this got?
If I had £40k to spend on a weekend/track toy, I'd seriously consider it.
