My car is on it's last legs and I'm struggling to find something to replace it with. Must be petrol, small enough to easily fit in a single garage and preferably with a higher driving position (just because I find it more comfortable). This will be my work car so probably the most important thing is a huge boot as I need to keep all my spare parts and tools in it. For this reason I also need the boot area to be secure with nothing on display. Mileage is only about 6K per year and budget is £4K Max.

If the Fiat Panda sport was available in the next size up then that would possibly be the ideal choice! Thought about a C-Max but they're a bit "school run" and the old model A-Class are a bit long in the tooth? Can anyone give me some more suggestions so that I can go car hunting this bank holiday?!

Cheers

my immediate thought is an audi a2. dont go for the fsi engine though they choke themselves on their own soot.

Honda Jazz?
Nissan Note?
Not sure if the boots would be big enough, but these are next size up from the Panda.

Ford Fusion? Suzuki Wagon R?

Ford Fusion was my thought too. I'm afraid anything in this category is going to be a bit school-run or old-person, because they have the same needs. Focus estate not do-able? The Focus driving position is quite upright.

Sounds like you need a van...

Why petrol? Is diesel no an option?

If you want tall, then a 3 door Vitara or Jimny would fit the bill. Big load area if you fold the rear seats down. But you'd maybe have to convert to van if you don't want people to see in.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I suppose I do want a car that has some of the qualities of a van, but I don't actually want or need a proper van! No diesel as I'm put off by the servicing costs on what will be quite an old vehicle at this price point. I'd also quite like an automatic so maybe a fusion or jazz might be worth a closer look as there seem quite a few about.

I can recommend a Nissan Note, but not for their driving experience! Comfortable, economical, Tekna gives a nice spec. Boot can be big or small with an easily moved rear seat.

The mercedes A-class has an amazing load space. The best feature is the flat floor and seats that can be removed in minutes, giving you a van-like load space and that higher driving position you are looking for.

Golf Plus which has the same footprint as a Golf but is taller. The boot can be extended by sliding the rear seats forward - not sure if that exposes the contents though.

The Seat Altea is the same car but less soporific than the Golf Plus. It also comes in XL version with a larger boot.

Kangoo. We had one and it was a brilliant versatile car with a mahooosive boot.

Mercedes A-class W169. Brilliant everyday cars.

W169 is the model recently superceded - avoid the first generation A-class. Base engine is fine. Do not under any circumstances contemplate an automatic.

Suzuki SX4 would fit the criteria well.

???

I don't see how servicing costs would really be any different.

The previous shape SEAT Leon felt half way between a standard hatchback and an SUV. There's plenty of headroom and you can raise the seat height to get a high driving position. Boot is a reasonable size.

I can't take this post too seriously. Requirements are; small, tall, petrol with a huge boot and OP suggests a panda. I suppose 3 out of 4 criteria met isn't too bad :-)

Nope, I actually said if the panda was available in the next size up it would be ideal.
