Small, tall petrol car with huge boot under 4K?

My parents abuse theirs... Long gaps between services, umpteen tons of rubble from a house project, mechanically unsympathetic drivers (to say the least) and Dorset roads, it just keep going. I've driven it a few times and as an around town car it's pretty good. Not sure I'd want to do a lot of motorway in it, but the visibility is good, it's pretty comfy and reasonably quiet, plus reasonably nippy (not fast, but it copes quite well)
It is slow and ride very soft. Comfy though. Think the A-class is certainly going to be worth a look then. Anyone know how the size compares with the previous model long wheelbase version? I've been a passenger in one of those and the space was impressive, but the newer one looks like it might be a touch smaller? Boot space is the main priority anyway.
Some other good suggestions too so lots to look at, thanks again!

Look it up on wikipedia. We had a Modus and currently a Roomster. Sister has a W169 A Class.
Modus and Roomster are adaptable and spacious if you don't need the seats at the same time as the boot space. A Class less versatile but a bit more spacious for rear passengers. Also, it has the highest driving position.
Modus and Roomster both did European trips; withe no need for the back seats, they were both pretty useful. Modus harder to work on: headlight bulb is bumper off. Roomster is easier to work on. Ours is a PD so chugs along happily if gruffly.
Personally, I'd consider sacrificing the high driving position and test driving a Fabia estate. Odd looking things, but undeniably and inherently useful.
