Bit of a dilemma, my step daughters boyfriend (car modding mad) has bought her a purple and chrome steering wheel.
It's the type you would expect to see on a mini, my dilemma is the car she wants to put it on is a 10 plate mk7 fiesta titanium which is completely standard apart from purple ford stickers on the wheel centres!
This means she'll loose the AIRBAG, cruise control and stereo controls and IMO will also look gash on a standard modern fiesta.
So if fitted I have read you need specialist insurance, it will fail an MOT and might actually be illegal (sources Google!) Can I have some thoughts please!!

Just throw it at him the next time he comes round.

Seriously though, it's a nice gesture but you'd be mad to replace a standard steering wheel with that and lose the driver's airbag. See if he can get a refund and buy something a little more tasteful?

It doesn't really matter if it is illegal etc

Just tell her it is regardless.

Job done !

Just say no way, airbags are there to help in a crash, unless he's bought a matching harness and seat set it's just not worth the risk.

It's a total non starter. Long gone are the days when you could do that sort of thing. Apart from looking crap if he actually manages to fit it(Ipresume he has a boss also) the insurance will be invalidated and the value of the car will plummet.
Tel him to buy her some nice underwear instead.

You really should be removing him from your daughters life. This shows that not only is he a chav, but he is a bit thick and has no regards for your daughters safety.

He's a nice lad and he does have questionable taste in cars (stance!!!) but I did raise the safety issue with her!

That's a Chinese blinged-out crap wheel, the basic design is a ripoff of the Nardi deep corn I have in my MX-5 (No airbag from stock, so fine to change).

What does "show use only mean"?
Well, here's a video that shows how safe these things are:

Ask yourself this simple question - would you allow your (step)daughter to drive around in a car without an airbag, knowing what can happen in the event of a crash without one?

If not, the answer is obvious.

I have made my opinion quite clear as has her mum, I was more curious about insurance and MOT issues. I don't think she is going to fit it but she is not sure how to tell the boyfriend!

Simple - tell her to blame you.

Oddly enough, from a link posted in another thread, the MOT Inspection manual states:

Under Section 5.4 Supplementary Restraint Systems (SRS):

Method of Inspection

1. As far as practicable, check that all airbags
fitted as original equipment are present and
not obviously defective.

Reason for Rejection

1. An airbag obviously missing or defective.
Note: A passenger airbag that has been
switched off is not a Reason for Rejection.

So simple just go through the simple process of fitting the original wheel once a year!!! I think the steering wheel is going to be a non starter. I really don't know what he was thinking.

That is bloody awful. He paid over £100 for that? It's hideous. Tell him to bugger off and take his tat with him.

"Show use only" is a disclaimer so that the manufacturer/seller cannot be held responsible if you die/get busted for using it (it's common on non-standard numberplates and tat like that)

Yes, it will fail it's MOT - and it might be more than a yearly swap cos when Plod sees stuff like this, she'll get sent back to get it re-tested.

It would also invalidate her insurance!!

Buy one of these, attach it and let him use it from the passenger side?

p.s. there is a means by which airbags can be removed legally, but I'm buggered if I can find-out what it is (I've seen it done for project cars which passed MOTs, so...
