BMW M3 30 Jahre Edition

Want an M3 Competition but feel it doesn't have enough limited edition logos? Here's your car!

PH is currently out at the N24 with BMW - livebloggery to follow soon - but here's something even more interesting than Augusto Farfus plonking an M6 GT3 on the front row. It's the BMW M3 30 Jahre Edition. Yes, just like the M5 in fact. And yes, it really was that long ago.

Like a Competition Pack but more expensive
Like a Competition Pack but more expensive
This car therefore marks three decades since the first E30 M3 customers received their cars. To all intents and purposes, it is an M3 Competition embellished with a few little limited edition accoutrements. Not a bad car, by any stretch, but 30 years could probably have been marked even better with a four-door GTS, in the style of the old M3 CRT. Just a thought...

All 500 of the 30 Years M3s available globally will be offered uniquely in Macao Blue, a colour that was originally a special option introduced on - you've guessed it - the E30 M3. A six-speed manual is standard with the seven-speed M DCT also available, and the performance is identical to an M3 Competition Pack.

Mmm, anniversary
Mmm, anniversary
But to prove this is a 30 Jahre Edition M3, not simply a Competition Pack M3, there are a few key distinguishing cosmetic features. See the carbon fibre interior strip wording, the illuminated door sills and the headrest embroidery (!). The outside is fairly restrained actually, the M3 apparently calming down a little now it's entered its 30s.

As mentioned there will be just 500 of these special M3s available, with 30 offered in the UK. Best be quick to get one then, and wealthy too: the 30 Jahre will cost £82,675 when it goes on sale in the summer, or £23,070 more than a standard M3 Competition. Yikes. And you thought the GTS looked a lot.

Personally speaking, I couldn't spend that on any new car, as I'm a classic fan. But as a special car / investment of you don't want a Porsche RS, it should be safe sound and more fun than knowing its in the bank!

I've read the article a few times and perhaps it's because it's late and I'm lacking in sleep but is the article suggesting that for an additional 23k you get Macau blue paint, carbon fibre interior strip wording, illuminated door sills and headrest embroidery.

WTF!?

No. No.

You also get a plaque on the dashboard with the number of your car out of the edition of 30.

Love the car but it is not worth double the price of a six month old M3 with 3k miles on it. Regardless of colour and bloody numbered plates. BMW M division engineers will be embarrassed to see it at that price. Shocking.

Absolutely...a standard M3 doesn't feel like its worth the money in terms of interior quality versus a 316d, yet they still continue to take the piss, hats off I suppose.

This M3 is lovely and I can only think of about 150 cars I'd rather spend 80 grand on......

No, you also get below as partof the Competition Pack but given that it's normally a £3,000 option your end conclusion (WTF!?) remains valid.

19bhp power upgrade
0-62mph sprint drops to 4.0sec
Chassis: recalibrated springs, dampers, anti-roll bars
Updated driving modes, Active M Differential
20in M alloy wheels with 265/30 (f), 285/30 (r) tyres
Lightweight M sports seats, M-striped seatbelts
M sports exhaust, Shadow Line black gloss detailing

As an owner of 2 x bmws I don't type this lightly but bmw is taking the michael now. This is literally a car cooked up by the marketeers - the comp pack plus some cosmetic gimmickry. It makes me wince to see the money they want to screw out of people for what frankly would be a dealer special a few years ago rather than the remembrance of one of their greatest cars of all time.

The engineers must weep when they see this kind of exercise

No wonder they are only selling 30 over here. I doubt they could find any more mugs than that.

Morning all, had a reasonable sleep and reread the article.

Competition Package 'seems legit'. Given the modifications and increase in performance it could be argued as good value over and above a standard M3.

This 30 Jahre Edition is £23k(!!) more than a Competition Package M3 for essentially a few trim pieces and according to this and this article, 'exclusive' Frozen Silver paint for UK cars.

Again...WTF!?

Struggling to comprehend it.

fk off BMW.

That's just TTP.

If only the BMW marketeers had paid attention to the other stories on Pistonheads.....

£82k for this would have caused a very different and much more welcome stir:

That would involve too much effort and investment. BMW seem happier charging +£20k for two door sill trims instead laugh

Alternatively you could strap a pair Rolex to the sills of a regular M3, then step on those.
