It's great to hear that everyone has a story of some sort about the oldest car they've ever driven!

This, when it belonged to my father - the people in the photo are not relations.

It's a Turner, built in, if memory serves, 1918 or thereabouts. It's a Dr's coupé which means it has a dicky seat. As for the driving experience, very heavy steering, no synchromesh, brakes on 1 axle only and those operated by a lever on the outside of the car. Suspension, truly cart like( as in horse and) top speed 35 mph ish. I loved it.

1929 Austin Chummy - not mine though. Been driven in a Rolls Royce 20hp and Bullnose Morris, and owned a 1947 Morris Ten Series 'M'.

My Morris Mini-Minor 850. Built Dec '59 Registered Jan 1960, starter button on floor, dip/main beam by pedals, flashing bulb on the end of the indicator stalk. I had it in the 1980s though, after someone (from the 70s I'm guessing) put in crushed velvet seats with covered buttons and glittered paint! Great little car though.

58 Beetle (it was 25 years old when I had it). To be fair to it, despite being astonishingly slow, it was a lovely car. Smooth, quite comfortable, reasonably quiet, economical really. It did the everyday transport thing as well as any other car with the sole exception of being a bit too slow. I think if they still made them, minus the breathtaking tendency to rot, but plus a slightly quicker air cooled boxer, I'd still want one. Massively charming thing to gad about in. Modern cars do tend to have no character what ever, if an air cooled beetle has anything at all, it has character. In buckets.

1920 ABC that belonged to a customer. It was pretty tricky to drive, they had a reputation for being hard to start, the accelerator pedal was in between the clutch and brake, and it had a vertical gate gearchange. Of course something that old would attract a LOT of attention, then of course factor in the value making driving it really rather stressful.

I had a 1967 Jaguar 420G for a while. I now have a 1975 Jaguar XJC and the jump in that time is unbelievable as they feel like they are from different centuries.

Oldest was a 1978 Escort RS2000. I've generally always had an old car as a second car and I prefer them for fun, but the older I get the more I can appreciate some creature comforts (I'm 36 now). Still have an Escort and also a 1983 Series 3 Landrover, and the Escort drives live a Bentley compared to the Landy!

Re the Rothwell. As long as you had to steer and brake then it counts as far as I am concerned.

I think the oldest is a 1961 Simca Aronde, and then a 1964 Citroën ami 6.
But I drove a lot of cars from the 60's so I'm not totally sure.

1969 MGB, heavy steering and a gearbox that wouldn't feel out of place in a van. Still great fun though.
