It's between these cars now;

The needs are:

Auto
Full leather interior
Five doors
65+mpg
Under £12k
Sat nav
Under 100,000 miles (unless its really good)
Less than 3 years ago

So it came up with a wide range of st varying from an Aixam incorrectly described as having a Sat Nav to a Volkswagen Golf.

Being a previous owner of a Golf IV (well it was the missus' , and so is this car, it was her first car, since then she has gone through 2x Mazda 626s, a Hyundai people carrier, and a Lexus RX) it is in my good books.

I am impressed with the Audi A3 - it is just a posh version of a posh version of a white goods car. That being said there is a fantastic S-Line one of the new gen for sale. Looks interesting for what is a bland car.

The CT200h is just ridiculously bland but it is good on fuel. A nice Mark Levinson stereo system, and a cool high tech dash. I have heard the ride is firm.

I'm open to suggestions. It must have all of the above. Also, open to opinions.
It will be used:

Stop start traffic for school run (which includes 1 junction commute on the M25, all the way through Chorleywood.
4am commutes to the high street on weekends, and a rush hour finish
Shopping.

The car will be treated well, with Shell V Power fuel.

Thanks smile

65 MPG in real life? In a VAG engine & auto box?

I've got the moon on a stick round here somewhere too!

The CT200h *is* ridiculously firm, on a 20 minute test drive I was avoiding anything resembling a bump or divot within 5 minutes! For a boring car it shouldn't ride like a go kart.

I had a CT200h as a courtesy car a few times and tried to like it but just couldn't. For such a forward thinking company, Lexus completely dropped the ball with that one. The IS300h is miles ahead of it and, given the discounts available on those, I'd take one instead.

Unfortunately I can't stretch the extra 2k for a base IS, so Golf/A3 it is

Take a look at a Giulietta with the 1.4 Ma 170 engine with TCT box. Try it . Good fun to drive

The A3 if it's the new model (haven't experienced the previous one) is a nice place to spend time, particularly in s line trim. Had a new sportback as a company car for a year or so. Interior is particularly smart and feels like a bigger car spec . Quite a bit more special than a golf IMO.

Only gripe for me was the boot size wasn't amazing but imagine that it's in keeping with other mid hatchback size cars ..I just should have ordered a bigger car.

Yes the car I'm looking at is the new model , (63 plate), its in S Line trim with 84,000 miles and all the goodies. It rather looks like the old "Black Edition" model. Smart looking car. It has the TFSI engine that has poke but not very high fuel economy (claimed 55mpg). Boot size isnt a problem as it will not be the daily, which will be my Allroad

I get 56mpg out of mine without trying particularly hard - no way I could imagine 65mpg though unless I were just doing long distance non-motorway stuff without much stop and start.

Its the thing with premium hatches - they don't depreciate.

A Golf SE with 40,000 miles - £10k franchise.
An A3 S-Line with 84,000 miles - £11k dealer or £14k franchise.
An CT200h Advance with 40,000 miles - £12k franchise.

They certainly do depreciate. For a start in 2 years they have halfed in price just like any other car. Look how much they are then worth a couple of years more down the line with another 20k miles on them. You will be the one bearing the last brunt of big depreciation.

In 2-3 years they will be worth half that again if not less, totally negating the point of achieving 45mph.

Sorry, I meant they don't depreciate as far as other hatches like the Focus. Those have fallen off a cliff.

They have halved in price yes, but they are going to do a job and depreciation is not too much a factor. I would be scared of depreciation for my allroad. That has lost 7.5 grand every month for the last 8 years.

Depreciation is still a much bigger cost than mpg. I'd rather an old V8.

Just had a look and a 2013 focus is now only a couple of grand cheaper than your list of cars but it was a fair bit cheaper new so if anything they have depreciated less than these.

All common cars, all pissing money in depreciation and all still got plenty of pissing left to do. Mpg is a drop in the ocean.

7.5 grand per month for 8 years... You paid over £700k for an Allroad?!
