Go with the ct200h if you buy with your own money. Its a great car with great powerline. And Lexus just get better when you own it.Small engine diesel A-R Giulietta is my other vote, but as a car it's not as good. And small diesel engine is little bit of meh... Still a very interesting car for a hb and it is more reliable than those vag-things. If you survive with 2 door, MiTo could be the third option. Hot temper beauty with lot of engine choises. At least 1.4 t-jet is a great engine
Don't want to be the guy that offers something completely different but....

Cat D but very high spec, and ridiculous fuel economy! Mid size saloons seem to depreciate quicker than hatches.

Had a good nosey round a few CT's with the wife and kids, test drive booked tommorow for a 40k mile SE-L Premier late 2011 model priced very competitively! One with a RX400h too - late 2009 SR priced VERY enthusiastically too..£12k!!!!!! Ridiculous. The CT is the same price and you're getting a HELL of a lot more car! Anyway, looking at the negative reviews (e.g Clarkson saying the ride was so hard it could be used to break ice ) were all about the F-Sport. Here's hoping its a lot more supple? The Golf and A3, Leon etc. Dont seem to give you much equipment? My head and part of my heart say CT..
Anyway, the Lexus forum member says that on his commute (very similar) he claims he gets 59 MPG every day consistently. (And dont go saying hes an eco fanatic, he has a IS F as a toy!). VW, he owned as well, only brought him 49 MPG. I did sit in a CT and it was far far better than the pictures, and twice that for the neglected one at Cargiant (all alacantara seats ) . Tommorow's the decider!

Err, I was looking at a 114d
But thanks, the CT200h was a disappointment.
Good luck! But thanks, the CT200h was a disappointment.
I had a 123d for 6+ years and it averaged 48.2mpg over 81K miles, then I sold it as I had a car that used petrol rather than the fuel of the devil!
Personally wouldn't bother with a 114d (I had one as a courtesy car) - to get it to keep up with traffic you end up with the accelerator buried in the carpet so economy tends to be no better than the gruntier options!
