Definitely worth a visit whether you drive it or not. Stunning scenery, lots of places to watch if something's happening on the track be that industry pool or tourist driving and amazing driving roads all around it too.

I went recently, just as a spectator, and instantly fell in love with the area. Some great places to get close to the circuit and watch, and there is an endless supply of exotic machinery just buzzing around. Steak in pistenklause and pizza in pinnochios (adenau) are well worth it too!
+1 for pizza in Pinnochios here as well.

Biggest pizza I have ever seen and under 10 euros (2011 prices) so definitely worth a visit...

I did 4 TF laps on a Tuesday evening, as soon as it opened (17:30 from memory). Wasn't dangerous IMO, but glad I got on the track and experienced it in my own car, one I know well, before it got busy or at a weekend.

And then had a well-deserved steak on a stone.

Good call! very jealous wink

I've done a number of TF days prior to or after planned trackdays. No particular issues with the locals if you get out of the way and keep a look out for trauma developing ahead of you. You can see a bust up waiting to happen quite easily. Non combatants don't tend to be collateral damage, but I'm sure someone will have an anecdote disproving this. lol

Definitely worth a visit, even my girlfriend liked it and she is not a petrolhead. I think that renting a car for some laps is worth the expense but even a ring with your own car at sensible speed is something to consider, I did not find it intimidating. Some years ago I also tried the ring taxi with the E60 M5s, nice!

Do you have any idea of the dates your planning on visiting?

A rather weird little Dickie Bird has asked me to help you out here, I don't have the time today but I'll send you an Email tomorrow.
Adenauer, I am intrigued!

I'm staying at this hotel:

http://www.weinromantikhotel.com/

on the 29th of June for 3 nights, so moving on early morning of the 2nd July.

Google maps is telling me it's a 48 minute drive to the Ring from the Hotel.

I'm sure they have some veggie options as it's largely Italian, it's best known for that steak. The place is worth a look too.
I'll get in there then Magic, Italian is the easiest food for veggies, always a choice of stuff.

I wasn't going to bother this year as I thought it might be getting boring but seeing as you've made the effort to request it...smile
Great
I can assure you, not one person here will be bored of reading about a petrol head in a supercar!
Okay John I'll try and put something interesting up as I go along, leaving England on the 22nd.

I'm heading over that weekend (29th through to the 4th) for the Truck GP on the 'new' track, I believe it's also a round of the Blancpain GT series if some motorsport is your thing! I booked the sunshine back in January so it should be quite a pleasant weekend laugh.

Very good shout especially as I don't think you can get insurance for your car at the ring unless it's a dedicated trackday (even then, would UK insurers cover it?)

If you really don't want to do a lap,at least make sure there is something on the Nordschleife to watch.

Okay, the track is open for Touristenfahrt from 17:15 until 19:30 for each of those days. During the day there should be something to watch in terms of industry testing going round and from 17:15 you could either watch some TF, or do a lap yourself and then watch some as others have mentioned.

Nice Hotel, and yes, probably about 40 minutes from the ring, up the A1 to Daun and then across to the ring.

The Hotel is in a lovely spot right on the Mosel you you might like to spend the first half of the day there and then bimble up to the ring after lunch, watch a bit of testing, watch a bit of TF, do a lap, then do the touristy thing and have steak on a stone in the PK and then drive back to the Mosel. The roads are nice here, but they are equally nice around the Mosel.

Go and have a look at Cochem. smile

You really do not need to go and have a look at the white elephant up at the new GP track, it's just massive lumps of lifeless empty concrete.

Thanks Adenauer for a very comprehensive overview, I will certainly follow your suggestions (except for the lap, I'll leave that to others!)

I took my oldest boy there for his 18th birthday weekend back in 2010. Spent the day spectating a TF session at Adenauer Forst and hanging around the car park. He loved it. Did an overnight stop in Leuven on the way down (dinner in the NotreDame Quadimodo) and maxed out the Focus on the way back. Fun times and we often say we should do it again sometime.

+2

Great driving roads to get there from the Ring too.
