IMO, they should just end each Top Gear with "and for those of you that actually want hear about cars with a depth exceeding that of a 5 year old's insight, tune in to Extra Gear!"

Chris I think is yet to settle into the format, but I think he will and will only get better.

I feel he may be a little too technical to perhaps appeal to the masses and therefore appear on the main show, buts it's not as if Chris Evans seems to be appealing to many. I certainly wouldn't complain of he ended up partnering with Matt Leblanc though.

I came back from the US on Monday, where I'd been since the previous Wednesday, getting by on about 3 hours kip a night.

I've not dare try Top Gear Extra yet. Harris sends me to sleep under normal circumstances.....

He needs to front the main show with Matt LeBlanc.

Chris, Harris being the only one worth mentioning on the show, really knows, loves and articulates his subject beautifully without having a presenting style that's a clone of either Clarkson, Hammond or May.

Matt LeBlanc looks like he has great potential if steered properly in the right direction. Evans doesn't possess the imagination or ability to do this but Harris does.
Where's that cringe thread ;-)

I all seriousness, I don't mind Chris Harris, in small doses, I do find him quite dull and one dimensional though. Let's face it to people other than car enthusiasts who post on car forums he would come across as a total car geek, boring and not the lead presenter for what is an entertainment show featuring cars.

Love him or loathe him to say Evans doesn't have imagination or ability and Harris does is stretching it a little, I'm no fan of Evans but he has had a rather more succesful TV career than Chris Harris who has done well at what he does - car reviews.

It's a bit early yet and will hopefully become more natural / authentic. The early editions of the old top gear were s bit wooden. it needs to improve though has Evans was a little painful to watch and Harris (who as per the OP said has done well and is to be congratulated) was trying too hard to be a presenter. I really don't need him trying to be amusing about someone's dodgy choice of car - need him to be testing interesting cars. Even the Nomad bit, it didn't need to be dressed up in a Top Gear style challenge, it would have been much better in the style of one of Harris's online videos.

If they allow Harris to do what he does well, it will be successful - if they insist on forcing these personalities into the old format, I'm not so sure.

I'm not sure where this modern phenomenon of obedient flattery has come from.

It's probably tied in with that other modern fad of celebrating mediocrity.

Extra Gear, like the new Top Gear was pretty rubbish imo.

Chris Harris' videos on youtube are mostly excellent, and it is precisely because of those videos that I hold this opinion on EG and TG.

This could open a few doors for Matt LeBlanc. He could make it into films or a tv comedy series on the strength of this.

Eh? He's been doing what he does for years, I was commenting on harris in general not the Extra Gear shows, which as an aside I honestly can't see why it's getting so much praise on here, hopefully it will improve but it was really low on content and really doesn't need an extra celebrity feature.

Back to Harris and top gear, the reason (as everyone keeps saying on here) the Top Gear format has worked is because of the personalities of the presenters, Harris is a good car reviewer but lacks any sort of 'personality' to front an entertainment TV show.

Edited to add, I found Chris Evans a bit try hard but I enjoyed the show overall.

I would say well done to CH as well.
Never met the bloke so may be a cock in RL but he comes across as a proper car nut and the kind of guy I'd love to go for a drive and discuss the day over a pie.

At least three inches shorter than Chris Goffey, if not more.

I think with their 'celebrity' slot they really ought to restrict it purely to car related individuals who have something interesting to say. More than enough racing drivers, instructors, engineers and backers knocking about to make it a valuable slot from a consumer viewpoint rather than being another slot for hire by every media agent with a book of clients to milk.

I meant it's early for any chemistry to develop with this new team and for them to be comfortable with their roles in it - pretty clear that only LeBlanc was comfortable.

And yes, Harris has been doing his thing a long time, and I don't believe for a minute he will become the general entertainer that everyone on TopGear is expected to be. You'd hope that Extra Gear provided a platform to do things a little differently and maybe give him the chance to do what he does well.... Episode one suggests not but maybe in time they will spot the issue and fix it.

Who predicted that May & Hammond would end up being perceived the way they are??

I think he is alright - well done.

A lot of whingers online who think they know best and could do better - well, go out and make a few car review videos and see the response you get. I bet it's a lot tougher to do in real life than critising others for their career choice.

Whingers get the easy part by sitting on your arse eating Doritos on the sofa replying on PH saying this is st and that is st. Chris knows what he is talking about, genuinely passionate about cars and tries his best to entertain a broad range of people who also like driving.

Well done Chris - if you're reading this, don't listen to the haters. They're probably out fixing a toilet for a living whilst you are living the dream. smile
