I moved to 215 40 17's and have really liked them but may try 215 45 17's next as better tyres available in that size, the extra width is good for both grip & looks.

I was thinking of moving up to a 50 profile to be honest. I'm totally out of touch with tyres, what are some of the better brands and models to look for these days?

These are good and a really good price

I'm running these at the mo
http://www.camskill.co.uk/m54b0s103p111331/Vredest...

But may try something softer, 40 series non runflat are ok on rougher surfaces but 45's will obviously be better but may look a bit chunky on the rim.

Better prices than I expected, are things like the Michelins etc worth almost double the price of those Uniroyals?

I know you get what you pay for with tyres but when does the law of diminishing returns kick in? How much better are those Uniroyals over the cheap 'Nakang Ditch finders' you usually see ?

If you are wanting fun in the twistys then I'd stick to mid range or up if a good deal can be had, if you are wanting scared in the twistys then linglongs ahoy biggrin

Real fun in the twistys would be these or similar

Double the price though, which is hard to justify even for a weekend toy. There must be some middle ground?

Had the option of going for a E46 325TI Compact, but after driving it on 19" wheels on our back roads I found it irretating and not much of a rewarding drive - even if the engine was the best thing in the package.

I rather went for a cheap, easy to run 316TI E46 (with 1.8L 90kW Motor). It's lighter, has the sport (M-Pack) suspension, but does not get as upset with mid-corner bumps and the DSC can be switched off 100% smile
It revs till 6500 RPM all day for a joke, and still give 7,3L/100km consumption and pulls well when driven properly - very rewarding!

In afterthought I could have gone for the 318ti (2.0L) for a bit more go, but none were availible in the timeframe I had to look for a car.

It's fun like an MX-5, but with 4/5 seats, a roof and a huge boot!

Suzuki Ignis Sport.

You're unlikely to find as much fun for as little ££££ - considering purchase price and running costs.

But then I would say this, 2 months on I still absolutely love ragging mine around.

edit - dammit should've read the whole thing...

I used to have an original BMW Cooper in my early youth when I lived about 30min to an hour from the best mountains of Europe. Most winter weekends I used to throw the ski gear in and went blasting up to the resorts.

Remember I caught up to a train of Caynne Turbo, RS6, WRX. They all had me on what straight bits there were but I recall well that they were properly holding me up (except for the WRX perhaps) on the many twists and turns.

By the third year of ownership, wringing it out whenever I could, I really did feel like it's an extension of me. Hit some black ice on one corner and catching the tail felt as easy as getting up from the office chair. Ended up using the third steering wheel (handbrake) a lot on ice - for fun and to avoid stuff.

Did multiple EU jaunt with it too and got up to 230km/h - steady as a rock.

Oh and it felt solid as hell build wise.

Definitely the best steer I've owned and likely best car I've owned title shot.

You've made the right choice there!

Crossfire SRT6.

Stiff suspension, balanced and very rigid chassis, bloody great power and very cheap to buy.

seriously seriously under-rated car. given the merc components you get reliability, space, comfort and speed at a very low cost.

Also got great community and a real head turner.

Funny you should mention one of those, I always wanted one, but the few that come up have often had the engine swapped or are complete dogs, I'd want it with the standard 1.3/100hp screamer, but you're bang on with what I want(ed).

rolleyes @ people still suggesting cars wink

Not a fan of the black on black, looks a bit council if you ask me, no offence laugh
Not a fan of forced induction for that matter, I find myself waiting on turbo cars, see with an n/a engine if you're at the right revs the torque is there as soon as you push the pedal, with a turbo, even if you're at the right revs there's still lag.
Did you try driving a 1*2?

For tyres I'd recommend Yokohama AD08Rs, run them all year round and they can be a bit slippy on the coldest and wettest of winter days but if you don't take liberties, they're awfully good fun the rest of the time.

eta: bear in mind if you change the profile and/or width you will effect the speedo accuracy, though whether it's significant depends on stuff... my head hurts right now so I can't give you the formula..

The throttle response on the supercharged cars is pretty good imo....although I'm sure some one will contradict that and produce some graphs etc hehe

How can the OP possibly make a decicion from this lot smile

Don't discount the Fabia VRS soot chucher. They need roll control (rear arb sorts this completely) and I fitted mine with Bilstein B14's and KW springs which lowered the car by only a tiny amount

Result was great - good float over the faster B's. No bounce, no crashing, no understeer

It was fun and a memorable ride was back over Snowdonia following a 911, and although the thing flew, in the end it was a soot chucker and just didn't have the excitement. I also had a lot go wrong including two turbo's

Ignis sport? Had one a few years ago and it was amazing fun on the right road.

Plus you could buy 2 with your budget and get some super sticky tyres and improve the brake setup.

MX5! Nothing beats the smile you get when you're roof down at the top end of second and third gear!

Also, pop up headlights rule! wink
