I love Minis. I also love the 106 Rallye. I had one and for pure fun, they're amazing but the Mini will be a lot plusher and more refined than the Peugeot. edited to add...Ah, he has bought a Mini, fait play, nice motor...

Max speed through the Moose test course
So presumably that's a stability test as opposed to a cornering test?Max speed through the Moose test course
Do you think stability does not relate to safe cornering/increased capability in cornering.

Clearly the best option is an early Boxster S. You could have had this off him for 5k and you'd be sorted.

Didn't realize decent S's were that cheap now.
OP, lovely looking R53 you have found there!
My OH had an R53 Mini One then an R56 Cooper and they were both great to drive, especially the Cooper! Just needed to be an S or a JCW to make the most of the chassis - definitely the best FWD car I have driven, although a MKI Golf GTi was pretty close! (But a decent one now would be way out of budget)!
Have fun!

182 Cup with some sticky rubber and carbon pads would be my choice. You can get something in really good condition for silly money. You won't find more fun for less. MX5 also fun but won't carry the speed of a sorted Clio. Don't underestimate the advantage of narrowness on those sort of roads. Boxsters do look good value but they are cheap for a reason - they go wrong alot and are expensive to fix. Maybe look at a Z4 3.0 too - rear wheel drive, cheap, quick and surprisingly economical - devisive looks aside they would be a good choice if you want a convertible.

I very much doubt the speed difference is significant in a sorted mx5 or Clio. Difference with the mx5 is that you have RWD and roof off for extra fun Baryonyx said:

For torque I was thinking of coming out of a lot of low speed bends and hairpins and wanting a nice amount of acceleration before the next one, TBH I've never had much luck with N/A motors, it always feels like your waiting for something to happen and it never does.
It sounds as though you haven't yet figured out how a gearbox works.Stickyfinger said:

That's all well and good, but does higher speed = more fun? I find that the cars are more fun nearer their limits, which is why the MX-5 is so much fun on a B road. The R53 Coopers and Renault Sport Clios also appeal to me, but they won't win in objective tests - but fun is subjective!Max speed through the Moose test course

A mag (Autocar i think) did a wet test last year. lateral g, stopping etc. GT86 on stock tyres came last on all metrics. Except every journo wanted the keys to that car at the end of the day for playtime.172 Cup, or a 182 Cup if you want air con, ESP and ABS (the 172 Cup has none of these but it also adds 80kg).
I've never had so much fun for so little, although I'd also consider a Mk1 MX-5 but I'm yet to drive one. Dare I say the Clio would be more reliable and won't rust although a proper cambelt/depasher/water pump change at a reputable specialist will set you back £700-800 so check its been done recently.
