What British Beef describes is exactly what I have in my TVR. The head unit has no fascia. I simply connect my phone to it and that is utilised as the fascia. It is brilliant but not without flaws.
Is that the Sony head unit with built in cradle that runs via Bluetooth?

If so, would you mind posting/PMing how you find it? Thinking of getting one to run Spotify/nav/torque pro...

Ah, no. It's the Oxygen unit but what's the Sony one as I've been looking for a replacement system for all the cars and not found anything yet.

I'm quite tempted. NFC pairing with phone, decent charger with a USB cable that can be changed to overcome obsolescence, etc., means I think it'll have some longevity.

Doesn't accommodate the latest huge phones, but that's not an issue for me. Losing my single DIN cubbyhole under my existing head unit might be a pain though.

What a shame it's double din. None of my cars have the capability for that.

Does the phone have to be fixed in the stereo though?

No, once paired then it's running off a Bluetooth connection, so anywhere in the car is fine. Battery or separate power connection and it'd be grand.

When I was building my audio system, I was looking at ways of turning my Iphone into the 'ignition' key

You can extract the UUID of the phone via USB, and I was going to interrogate the phone for that ID value

A microcontroller would enable a relay that controlled power to the starter and fuel pump (simple enough to bypass if you KNEW that's how it worked I suppose, but effective)

That would mean the car wouldn't start unless the phone was in it's cradle

The fly in the ointment is that I'm using a digital audio processor for the audio output from the iPhone and as that's USB, I can't get the UUID without disconnecting it from the audio processor

It would be feasible to do that so that at ignition on it would energise the UUID reader and once obtained, it would switch over to the audio processor, and remain on that circuit until the ignition was turned off, but it was an added complication that I couldn't be faffed with at the time

An alternative would be to build a circuit that sits between the phone and the audio processor and interrogates the iphone but passes all the data onto the audio unit, so it just sits there live

Perhaps I'll do that with my next mod

However, while I digress on this thread, I do see there being an opportnity for adding technology such as that to vehicles

I could imagine it could be unlocked using NFC on your phone, and started with a pushbutton when the phone is in the cradle

You'd never need a car-key again (unless your phone died)

Unless you didn't have your phone with you, or it was nicked or you left it in the pub etc. or would you have something simply like a car key that also worked? hehe

Just as you often have a 'master' with existing systems, yes, I'd expect so
