RE: Peugeot 106 Rallye: Spotted
Discussion
S1 was better in my opinion (I used to sell them new), but S2 still a fine steer. S1 was even more basic: no central locking, PAS and just a radio (ie no cassette) from memory.
Pedals weren't so bad: I also have size 11 feet and could heel & toe perfectly.
My S1 was the possibly one of the best cars I ever drove in the wet, not because of a particularly high level of traction, but because it was just so small and manageable. Left foot braking helped quell the understeer, if you were careful.

I remember a 1300cc S1 coming along to a cliosport meet once when I was much younger. I was a passenger in a 172 and this guy had brought his S1 and it didnt have any problem keeping up with the clios! I remember him overtaking use up a hill when the drive of said 172 was going for it although I think he might of had us in the wrong gear. Still impressive.

hmmm
That's halfway to a good e46 M3
I quite like these, but for £6k I think you've "really" got to want it. Lots of equally fun cars about for a lot less money.hmmm

To find such an analogue modern car in today's digital motoring world is refreshing and wonderful.
Perhaps it's the modern equivalent of an (original) Mini Cooper 'S', lightweight, enough space and performance, but more importantly it connects you to the drive. Not many cars, even then, could do that.
£6k may sound a lot, but the way the current market is (and personally I think it's overheated and overblown) we may look back on this in18-24 months time and think what a bargain it is.......

For an S1 being 300kg lighter and having a close ratio gearbox gives it a much bigger turn of speed than 100hp would suggest. That, and the Peugeot TU is easy to mod - a lot of them run throttle bodied engines with cams etc for 130hp, 160-180hp for the GTI-engined ones.

I'd politely suggest that is missing the point.

Obviously if they are selling at this money, there is a market for them. No denying that To find such an analogue modern car in today's digital motoring world is refreshing and wonderful.

Not sure I'd call it modern though. And for £6k there are simply lots of other 'fun' car options. Be it a proper classic like the Mini you mention.
Just look how cheap things like MR2 MK3's are or MX-5's. You even have TVR's in this sort of budget and kit cars.

So how long until the 306 GTI-6 follows this trend? The rallye version was only slightly different to the GTI, unlike the 106 where there was a big difference (particularly the S1).
I think the 306 is incredible value at the moment, £2-2,500 will get you a lovely one. They're also relatively modern and comfortable, it would get you to the Alpes without any discomfort and you'd enjoy driving around them in it. With a vested interest in it I'm pleased to see that Peugeot has followed this up (finally!) with the 308 GTi as it's by far my favourite segment of the market.
Seem to posting on here a lot last few days!
Peugeot 106 Rallye - after reading an article on the best affordable performance motors in CAR magazine around 1997, I just had to have one.
1 year later I had a new, Red, S1. Kept it from 1994-1998. 1.3 Litres, Lumpy Cam, 100BHP 1 ton. No PAS, No ABS, No nothing. Readline 7200RPM IIRC and the peak power around there. This was not a relaxing car. At 70MPH it was somewhere around 5000RPM !
It was, however, enormous fun. I hate modding cars - but I did replace the plastic steering wheel in mine for an identically sized beautiful Momo one which was, at the time, the thing to do amongst us Rallye S1 owners - I was so pleased with my mod :-) It made a massive difference to such a tactile car and my mates in the office all had a go sitting being the wheel just to behold this the wheel of beauty.... how things have changed.
In almost 4 years and 50K miles, not one thing went wrong, and the nature of the beast meant redlining was a daily occurrence. I'd really like another S1 just for fun but just can't justify it (money, time or space). There are so many out there that have the wrong engine or silly mods (like lowering or alloy wheels) which are just not what this car was about.
It had some really cool things. The Oil Temp Gauge doubled as an Oil Level Gauge (when the the ign. was on but not the engine) - never seen that before or since. Those white wheels looked great and the tappetty uneven idle on that lumpy cam - fab. The handling was just amazing - I can remember about 3 different roundabout I used to smile around every day on my commute.
It was a car that could split the driving nation into 2. Those who got it and those who didn't.
I think when I moved on from that car some of the magic of driving for me disappeared forever as cars inevitably become more refined, better equipped and boring or more cynically "fun" - oh well, happy days.
Sadly, I saw my old car about 10 years after parting with it on eBay going for a about £1K. It looked a wreck. The Momo wheel was gone, the bodywork was faded and it had 'overheating problems'. The interior looked good though. I should have bought it there and then - it's now not on the DVLA database so I imagine that was the last chance to save it.

Why oh why did I turn down a nice S1 Rallye for £300 in 2007.....
Oh that's right, I had kids!
It wont be long before Saxo VTS's and Pug 106 GTi's go this way!
I cant even shift my standard black early phase 2 (single plug ecu/cheaper tax) saxo vts for £800. So it wont be any time soon. Still wish i had stored my 106 gti and the two white phase 2 vts' i had!!Oh that's right, I had kids!

Funnily enough, I've just been droped off home by my local pug specialist garage, my S2 Rallye has a few 'issues' to attend to at present...
This car looks nice, but blue ones are much faster
Working in france currently and just today i have seen a blue s2 rallye, a white phase 1 rallye, a 106 XS, a 309 XS and two rare phase 1 Clio 172's (one in a bright red, and the other in a pale yellow - both factory colours). Ohh and a moonstone blue sapphire cossie 2wd, a mk3 escort popular in pastel blue and a mk1 Renault 5 (5dr)This car looks nice, but blue ones are much faster
Love seeing oldies being used as dailys over here!!

Agree with everything else, but I'm glad it's not just me that found this particular feature incredibly useful! Such a useful and simple thing to be able to check the oil level every time, it becomes 2nd nature after a while.I have a S1 with a 106 gti lump that I bought out of someone's drive for £500 last year. It ran but was SORN'd 5 years previously. Still not on the road due to emissions but have hopes for this year. As cars get faster and more driver assisted, the appeal of something that you can drive at the limit but within the prescribed limits is strong.
I bought my lad a blue S2 last year. There were 5 for sale at the time, all around 4k except his for which we paid 2k. The lad selling it had stripped some of the interior but it was all in a box including the original cassette radio. It has a GTI engine and a different cam but still has the Rallye gearbox which i believe has lower ratios than the GTI box. Great little car to drive as has already been said, although it is noisy at 70. The temperature gauge does like to creep up now and then
The more I think about it, nice though this looks, the price is pretty steep..
For £6k, you could have a 182 trophy or a 197 cup

I've had both the S1 Rallye - new in 1994 and the S2 Rallye New in 1998 - which I still have - it's a keeper.
The S1 is probably the better car for a punt down the lanes, but I used mine for that and for commuting and did 27k miles in the first year. There were definitely days when I was on the motorway and I looked covetously at a Mondeo 1.8LX or similar. Particularly if it was a hot day like in the Summer of '95. Last time I looked it was at a Peugeot tuning company up North being stripped either for parts or converted into a rally car.
IIRC, fifth gear was 4000 rpm at 70 and 5000 rpm at 85. Not soothing, at all, but what laugh the rest of the time! Took it to Cadwell in '94 with a pro rally driver to see what it could do.
My S2 was a better car for commuting, a bit more relaxed, but still no creature comforts. It's been a race car since 2001 and although the shell is original, it's a bit like triggers broom. Mines now got 140 hp still from the 8v 1600, but running the s1 gear box, inlet manifold and 4 branch exhaust manifold. Cracking little race car that I struggle to see what I can replace it with for the smiles per pounds. I've spent 10's of thousands on it over the years...

Bought mine 5 or 6 years ago and can't imagine ever getting rid.
Use it almost daily despite having multiple other vehicles - just popping out to get some milk of an evening can literally make my day 6yrs and many miles later.
Although I'm about 5k in and 158bhp (8v)
Mileage isn't everything with these, buy on condition and provenance over mileage. Here's mine on Sunday on the way up to the Haynes breakfast meet,I was a bit busy to get a snap of the magic number.
