RE: Shed of the Week: Jaguar X-Type V6
Discussion
Been hankering after a 3.0 estate in dark blue or black for ages (did they do a manual?). Just about ticks all the fun boxes whilst being practical and lush enough at the same time. The 3.0 had variable valve timing (not all that special in operation but still) which made it that bit more fun. I've driven a couple of the 3.0 S types (original and facelift) and they went really well, so with 4wd and a boot, why not?

Was stuck alongside one of these in traffic the other day. Sounded like the big end was about to pop... either that or the engine contains gerbils with tiny hammers. It was so loud that for a minute I thought it was MY car that had lunched its engine!
My neighbour has one and his is extremely loud as well, its a diesel but it does not sound right at all.One other thing to add, the 2.1 V6 isnt good, to the point where after driving two I worked out there isnt anything wrong with the engine, it just doesnt pick up
On the flipside, with the 3.0 I had I spent more money on fuel in a week than I paid in insurance for the year, and that was just getting to work

Bought a 3.0 recently to waft to work and back in for a grand. I was expecting it to be terrible but hilarious, but so far it seems to be surprisingly good! I think I'll keep it until it inevitably spews it's gearbox or transfer box across the road, whenever that may be.
Do get some strange looks driving it as a 28-year old, especially given its actually fairly nippy and I don't tend to drive it in the traditionally sedate Jaaaag manner people expect.

definitely don't buy the 'mondeo in drag' bullst.
Well, it's not completely untrue. Whilst it doesn't have quite as many similarities as, say, the Audi TT and the Golf, it's still based on the same platform as the mk3 Mondeo and shares a lot of the underpinnings. But, so what? It's not the bad thing that people imply when they make such comments. The Mk3 Mondeo was (still is) an excellent car.
Nice car, but I'd be tempted by this 3.0 manual if I was looking for one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/51-JAGUAR-X-TYPE-3-0-V6-...

Yes there were plenty V6 manuals made. Howard- said:

This is what's always struck me as a bit odd about the naysayers of these things. If it really does share a lot with the Mondeo then, yes, that might not justify the prices they wanted for them new, but nowadays you can get an unmolested 3.0 x-type for a lot less than an ST220 in equivalent nick, with the added bonus of AWD and a vastly better interior. Consensus seems to be that the Mondeo drove the best in its class by far back then so why not, if nothing else, appreciate the X as just that except posher?

The daft thing is, the X-type was always cheaper. When I got mine in 2007 (was 4-years old), I was originally looking for a Mondeo but there were more X-types to choose from & they were a better price. And AWD which helps.Consensus seems to be that the Mondeo drove the best in its class by far back then so why not, if nothing else, appreciate the X as just that except posher?
My father in law had one for 10 years from new between 2002 and 2012. It was a 2.5 manual and nothing went wrong with it, ever. Wasn't even that thirsty really, it would do 36 MPG on a brisk 30 mile cross country run on A roads....always low to mid 30s on the motorway at 75-80MPH. I don't really understand why a 3 litre is worth a fraction of an ST220 either. I recall the EVO Magazine comparison between a 2.5 sport and a 2.5 litre Mondeo back when they were new and the Jag absolutely slaughtered the Mondeo for all round point to point pace, composure and road handling...the ST220 I am sure would have fared better, but the X Type 3 litre was a close runner up to the E46 BMW330i in another EVO group test, losing out only because the 330i was faster! I think these X Types are under-rated. Snobs call them mondeos, but ignore the fact that equivalent era Audi A4s are really Passats underneath and the Mondeo Mk3 had a sharper chassis than the equivalent Passat did!
