Android Launchers
Discussion
I have just installed the Google now launcher on my one M8. I did this because sense home seemed to be crashing every day and my phone was lagging out constantly. Installed this and it's been mostly a breath of fresh air, phone much more responsive now and I like how the launcher handles the app tray and does home screen folders. I do find however that some htc widgets don't display properly and the Google search bar is baked into each home page.
So not totally sold, but it's a lot better than sense home. I may try nova in due course.

Never used a different launcher with my HTC but getting the Nexus encouraged me to play. Now running paid version of Nova launcher and love it, has allowed me to get a really clean home screen and an organised app drawer which, is all I want.
Tried a few others but Nova was the best by far.

Noob question: what's a launcher and why might I want one for my Galaxy S3?
It's the look and feel and how you can totally customise your device. For instance you can change how many icons you can have on the screen. I'm playing with Nova now and you can have up to 12x12 you can create up to 7 on permenant dock at the bottom.
You can change the tramsition affect when swiping between screens.
You can basically totally change the look and feel.
Go on youtube and search Nova Launcher review as alot on here appear to like it but you can see what it does before installing.

I have been playing with several amd have never noticed any speed changes either better or for worse but then I never had any speed issues to start with.
No need to root just install. Plenty on the google play store.
If you want to revert back check what you have first in Settings > Applications > Application Manager > Home screen. You can uninstall any new launchers and re select your old one from here.

Thanks. Will give it a go when I have time to put all the icons back! No need to root just install. Plenty on the google play store.

Only thing I wish they would introduce on Google Now is the ability to hide apps!
For example the phone icon is on main screen so why do I want it in the app drawer as well.
Only being a recent convert from Apple to Android I have never understood the app drawer. Why have 2 copies of all icons? For example the phone icon is on main screen so why do I want it in the app drawer as well.

You don't, unlike iOS you don't have to have all your app icons on your home screens, just the ones you use most of the time. I only have 4 icons on my home screen though, two of those are folders.I use Action Launcher 3, though I might have a look at Nova as I've never seen it and it seems popular.
I have it set up so swipe in from the left gives you a scrollable list of apps sorted by most used and with a filter applied to hide a load of apps completely. Main apps on the front page with a weather clock thing and a widget for my central heating. Scroll right has a google Keep widget. Swipe in from the right has my Agenda widget on it. Shortcuts to a few things across the top, mostly music/radio and navigation shortcuts and voice search.
Identical setup on my tablet for consistency.
The only negative with the launchers is that when you upgrade to the latest version of Android your phone pretty much looks and behaves exactly the same.
