Why do people do this? It is so annoying having cars driving at 50-55 such that lorries are forced to overtake (and hold everyone else up whilst they do). Is it for fuel economy reasons? But surely driving 55 rather than 60 can't make much of a difference. Or do they lack confidence? But even then, if I were lacking in confidence I'm not sure I would want to be overtaken by trucks and lorries all the time.

Of course there are the no-hopers as I call them but there is also a far worse breed at large that I never dreamt could possibly exist until I read about them on here; the hyper-miler eek

You should try driving one of those lorries, these people are a real pain in the neck. Along with cars that like to dive in front at average speed cameras, slam the brakes on and do 45,48,35,40MPH for the duration of limit (I won't say roadworks as I've never seen any being done in them).

Work around them, not hard. Its the ones that play along the 54-57 mph that are a pain.

I just think they're completely oblivious to what's going on around them. People who commute the same section of road day in, day out seem to be the worst offenders. I genuinely think they don't even recognise the HGV sat alongside them for several minutes as they gently fluctuate between 55-60. They also seem completely oblivious to the sheer hate directed at them from the built up traffic when it finally has opportunity to pass.

I'd be frightfully embarrassed, but some people just don't seem to care.

They also might be in the "DC are 60mph limit" club which seems to have a growing membership. Either way, they're just s who should be flogged at the roadside to deter others doing the same.

It is if you're restricted to the inside lane.

There was the outside lane closed on the M4 yesterday which forced everyone into just the two lanes, a young bloke in a Golf decided to sit at 40 in the inner lane meaning that now everyone had to move into the middle lanes which caused everyone to slow down to his pace.

You don't like it when people go faster than you, you don't like when they go slower...

I'm a bit lonely and I find that, if I drive at 50mph, then people are very friendly.
They, will often wave and flash their lights to say "hello".

I think.

50-55 on a motorway is not dangerously slow. As long as they are in the inside lane. I drive on the motorway daily to and from work and I'm never in a hurry, so tend to sit at about 60. Big difference in fuel economy over 70. I'm in the inside lane doing no one any harm, yet people seem to get very irate about my speed. Which always amuses me.

It may amuse you but definitely increases risks for other road users if it forces articulated lorries to overtake you, often causing bunching of cars, frustration and higher chance of bad driving from others. You might find it amusing to ps off other drivers but winding up people in charge of one to two tonnes of metal traveling at 70 mph not good for road safety.

Car is a big slow 4x4, and is very short geared. 70 just kills the thing MPG wise. I tend to pick a lorry and tailgait it, normally between 50-56.

I mean im talking about the difference ~10mpg so it makes a hell of a difference. (~20mpg at 70 ~30 tailgaiting a truck).

Artics can't overtake me. I'm doing 60 and they're restricted to 56.

The danger isn't my speed, but as you said, others getting wound up. I'm not responsible for other people's tttish impatience.

60mph is acceptable, 50mph isn't.

I think he enjoys doing it. He also thinks it's dangerous to drive or even walk laugh what a tit

It's never perfectly safe to do 80mph, even on a deserted airfield. It's not perfectly safe to do 5 mph, although 5 mph is safer than 80. Travelling at speed, even walking, comes with dangers. You have to weigh up reward and risk in order to decide what is acceptable.

Sometimes, when you're not in a hurry, it's a rather pleasant thing to do. M6 north of Preston for example, up to Shap and parts of the M74. Lovely.
