Why do people do this?
Eco-weenies.
Took a ZOE home from work and wanted to see what I could get out of it on my day off, part of the day was going to see my Grandma in Egham, I did 50 on the A3 and M25 as-well as driving everywhere else with an eco head on my shoulders, I returned to work having completed 90 miles over the course of the day and still had 16 showing in the battery; very impressed as the official Government figures gave it a maximum range of 130 miles.

Not a problem just overtake.
There a lot worse, things people do on the road.

Why do people use the phone while driving?

Because they do not care.

Sometimes, when you're not in a hurry, it's a rather pleasant thing to do. M6 north of Preston for example, up to Shap and parts of the M74. Lovely.
But you're the sole cause of the carnage on our roads......apparently!

I drive between 55 and 60. Do 80 miles a day. I tend to sit up behind a lorry (so he can see me with his mirrors), if I find that a lorry wants to over take me doing 1 mph more than me Ill ease off and let him over take me and then let him in front of me. More often than not I get a flash of the indicators for my trouble. I'm in no rush, more relaxed, not annoying anyone, totally aware of my surroundings but probably not really allowed to use the PH website

I find this much more relaxing than copying most of the other people on the roads that:
1) Sit in the "inside" lane doing 50 to 55 and no more, causing lorries to over take at 57, causing issues for those in point 2 below
2) Sit in the "middle" lane doing 60 and making themselves a nuisance to everyone else.
3) Sat in the "outside" lane going as fast as they can, slamming the brakes on every other second when they reach the white German exec in front of them OR having two empty lanes to their left but they'll be f***'d if they will move over.

Mind you I've had the same pads and disks for 110000 miles now.

60mph on speedo only equates to 57mph so no faster than calibrated speed on tachometer of hgv vehicle

It is very annoying when they cruise in the middle lane at 50mph oblivious to the lorries undertaking them.....

You do know that if you're doing 55 a lorry will try and overtake you? when you then fluctuate between 55 and 60 you cause your scenario 2. Well done

I'd say anything below 60 is criminally slow. The lorries are restricted to 56 mph but often exceed that going downhill so you have a mixture of angry lorry drivers trying to take advantage of momentum and slow fkers who think that saving 2gbp per month is worth the aggro it creates.

On a driving test you'd be picking up minors and risking a fail if you don't show confidence and get up towards the speed limit.
Why should it be any different on motorways if it clear enough?

Is the speed limit on DCs not 90 :-)

Yes but driving like this is very different to poddling along with a respect for lane discipline.

When we had our Type 25 campervan its top speed was pretty much 60mph, 65 at a push, and going up hills - even motorway hills - quite a bit less. Yes, we used to spend quite a lot of time amongst the HGVs, but what else could we do? We've now swapped it for a T4 that does 70 quite happily.

You should try driving one of those lorries, these people are a real pain in the neck. Along with cars that like to dive in front at average speed cameras, slam the brakes on and do 45,48,35,40MPH for the duration of limit (I won't say roadworks as I've never seen any being done in them).
Just overtake them. Most HGVs I've seen in roadworks just carry on doing 56, they know they won't be caught by the cameras.

I have not once ever felt the need or not been in enough of a hurry to drive under the speed limit on the motorway, I feel driving under the speed limit to the extent lorries are passing you is borderline dangerous. If I am truly not in a hurry I will set my cruise control at about 72. Most of the time my CC is set around 80 (and I am still overtaken by crazy RR and Audi drivers lol).

A minimum motorway speed of 56mph for cars ought to sort this out, where conditions allow.

I imagine its those that think / still believe the old mantra of Speed Kills, so in their eyes they are perfectly safe - and has already been stated totally oblivious to the world around them, the bunching up of traffic and Artics overtaking them.

Because they are restricted, low on fuel, don't feel safe...etc

I do this thing where I overtake them. Works for me.

Very good that.
Now here is my two pennorth; I haul our caravan down to the coast at least four trips per year. I know the word caravan will possibly upset a few peeps but bear with me....
Once we are out on the open road (ie most times the A34 from Oxford) on goes the CC at about 65 which will be a whisker over a true 60. We have a game - OH and I take notice of how many of the SPL (my term for 'Save the Planets') we can spot on our way to the campsite. Sometimes it is 5 or 6, most times many more. When we come upon one in front of an HGV we witness what a problem the poor driver has getting by them and of course the queue all this causes. Invariably when we get by and clock the offending driver it is one of the 'type' (they seem bred for it lol) which drives thus. I find them a pain as my outfit is capable of a lot more than the 65 or so which I use to pass but to keep reasonably within legality I don't normally go over that. I admit that there have been occasions where I have stretched beyond but I wont go into detail here. The important thing for me is that I keep a sharp eye out before dispensing with these idiots in my mirrors and I will not go unless I can see that I wont be causing a build up - a short span of clear road behind and a spurt of throttle and it is done. Often a look from the miscreant who seems to regard being overtaken by a car & caravan as an insult - tough.

It's ok. When I see cars behind me whilst I'm in the outside Lane, I always take the time to wave at them. I'm courteous like that. They do seem so excitable and gentle wave seems to make their pale flabby white faces go a lovely shade of purple.

Because they can.

I sometimes drive at 50, sometimes 60, mostly 70, but sometimes considerably more...(On a private road of course).....

Depends what mood I'm in and the prevailing traffic conditions.

I can understand the OP's post if it was 40, but 50's OK in the inside lane (imo)
