Hey folks,
having an absolutely dreadful time with hay fever just now. I have had it every year for as long as I can remember from late may to late July.
What is the best treatments to use - I have the haymax stuff you put around your nose and eyes and that was ok but now onto tablets as well.
Each year I take different off the shelf tablets, this years its Piriteze (Cetirizine hydrochloride) and they are ok but not 100% effective, any other recommendations much appreciated!

This. If not, I find Benadryl by far the best off-the shelf medication (not the one-a-day stuff, mind. It's useless).

I had this years ago and it was like a miracle cure for me.

Echinaforce tablets seemed to work well, can get them from Tesco, think they take a week to kick in but after that its all good.

For some reason the doctors wouldn't give me the injection so can't comment on that.

I've tried most other products and non of them work 100% Sounds like you are doing the right things, just a case of grin and bear it I think.

The only other thing I did was eat honey everyday for about 2 years. Since I did this mine has gone from being really bad to hardly having any issues last year and this so far. I'm not sure if that's just a coincidence. Certainly worth trying.

Fexofenadine but it's quite hard to get prescribed now. It's the only thing that worked for me. I only have a pack left so I'll be on my own again soon frown

Tesco's own brand tablets and Pirinase nasal spray seem to be working for me this year.

This year only Benadryl has worked, Cetrizine & Loratadine have not had any effect this year & I take them all the time for Urticaria.

From next Feb/march next year start taking some local raw honey regularly and see how you are when May comes along.

Starting to include probiotics in your diet either through food or supplements can also help though the improvements will be gradual year on year if you continue with them. Emerging research shows that our guts hold about 70% of our immune system so the stronger it is, the better. I personally know a couple of people swear that since they started making their own saurkraut and other fermented foods that their hayfever is barely noticeable but it took 2-3 years.

After being hayfever free for about 8 years it came back a few weeks ago and this time a vengeance! I dont think ive ever had it this bad. Pounding headaches, sore sinuses but surprisingly eyes are ok.

The usual over the shelf stuff has been useless. I've got the GP to renew my previous recurring prescription (which i havent renewed for years) for Telfast antihestamines. These use to work well but i think even these may struggle.

I think Telfast was Fexofenadine as I mentioned above. If it is, lucky that you can still get it!

Is it hard to get these days?

I was originally prescribed it for an allergy to soap based products which I suffered with. That allergy has also come back along with the hay fever. It's the soap allergy the prescription/medication will be based on.

I'm meant to be picking up the medication tomorrow so fingers crossed.

Mine has stopped prescribing (and said generally everyone will phase it out) due to bad side effects long term which can be possible. Didn't say what they were but wouldn't give me anything and told me to get over the counter stuff.

Thanks guys some very helpful info keep it coming!

Talking of long term health effects, I heard some long term use was mentioned in the press as causing dementia! Not sure if that was scare mongering!

Anyone else had issue with a strange taste in their mouth when they have hay fever?? Sort of metallic/ minty taste all the time? Thought it might be my sinuses?

Another thumbs up for me too - luckily I have it on repeat prescription so I just request a pack as and when needed (I try not to pop them too readily!)

Benadryl is just the brand name for Cetrizine. I take the one a day tablet which works fine for me, a long with Beconase Nasal Spray.

I was told by a Professor of Allergies that they used Loratadine as a placebo its so weak.
