Has anyone been so frustrated/embarrassed to get their car fixed because it's been in the garage so many times in 6 months? My Golf has been in 3 times for a clutch issue (Was the master cylinder) a full service, tyres then it's Mot and now it has what seems like a boost/wastegate issue and I really can't face going back again already..

No, neither my car or my bike (same manufacturer) have needed anything other that oil, filters and tyres in the 2 and 3 years I've owned them.

Service, tyres and MOT are routine visits so nothing to be embarrassed about.

Maybe time for a change?

Im sure the VW garage will be properly annoyed to take more of your money, and you should feel bad for bothering those poor mechanics, they'd rather sit at home unemployed you know? hehe

It should be the manufacturer that's embarrassed, not you.

We have a customer who has spent the best part of £5k keeping a beat up 2003 passat on the road over the past three years.

I don't think you have a lot to be embarrased about !

Going by recent experiences I really do feel that VW are massively overrated! My old Mk1 Focus was a much bette built car than the Mk5 Golf I have!

True, but it's the sheer amount of garage visits that's the problem. It's more having to borrow a loan car every time and listen to the muppets who give the "its because you drive too fast" etc bullst..

I was looking to change, but there is nothing that takes my fancy and my thinking of going diesel has been tempered by the tax increase next year.

Try a different garage?

Only worry when you get a Christmas card from the garage. At that point you know you need a new car!

In fact the final straw was when I went in to collect the car and they didn't have the bill ready but just said "pop in past and pay it when you're ready or we can just wait until your next visit" Helps that it's a little local garage and we all know each other by name, or we do now. They don't even phone to get the work authorised any more, they know I'll say yes so they just do it and let me know afterwards but that's because I'm a bit obsessive about my car maintenance.

I had a Golf for a few years, the Hondas have kicked it into the weeds as cars to own. Just done my forth trip around Europe on my bike and nothing, and I repeat nothing has gone wrong with it and keep in mind it has a little 600cc engine that revs to 13,000 rpm.

What do you think is causing you to feel embarrassed?

Are the garage acting as though you are a problem to them?

Are they telling you that VWs are reliable and you are driving it wrong?

If the former, remember you are the customer paying for their services.

If the latter, you have nothing to be embarrassed about as VWs have not been reliable since the 90s.

If it was a Japanese car then maybe ...

Years ago I had a mk 4 golf. It was 9 months old. Try 36 separate trips back to Vw with faults. They were as sick of me, as I was of them. It should have been kept longer but it was so bad I traded it for a Saab after 18 months.

Can't say I have any desire ever to have a Vw again.

Its more frustration than anything. Spent so much money on the POS that has stopped me doing/attending certain events. I usually go to a foreign WRC event each year, and I'm missing Finland this year which would be the greatest.

But loads of people including the garage owner (Who I used to work with) like to take the piss/give me st about driving too fast everywhere. Saying that the garage has been great, squeezing my car in when the work board is always full up, and I've been given discounts/labour off when it's been a repeat problem.

Then theres the smugness of the people who take great joy from my car being in the garage again!

But as has been mentioned, I probably should have sold it..

I've had two friends give VW's away because they've had so many faults they've just wanted shot of them. They both topped 10 AA call outs in a year for different faults. Admittedly not at 9 months old though.

Never known someone do that with any other manufacturer.

No, but I'm slightly embarassed every time I turn up at my favourite garage with a new car, because it's usually comically often, and when I change cars I like to have them serviced and any belts done etc.

Still, it's keeping the business in work so I'm sure they don't care!

Buy Korean next time and you'll forget what a garage looks like.

Only reason to be embarrassed would be turning up asking them to repair something you've broken trying to do it yourself
