We've all been there surely? Only twice but yes it ends up in lots of stick.

Its more frustration than anything. Spent so much money on the POS that has stopped me doing/attending certain events. I usually go to a foreign WRC event each year, and I'm missing Finland this year which would be the greatest.

But loads of people including the garage owner (Who I used to work with) like to take the piss/give me st about driving too fast everywhere. Saying that the garage has been great, squeezing my car in when the work board is always full up, and I've been given discounts/labour off when it's been a repeat problem.

Then theres the smugness of the people who take great joy from my car being in the garage again!

But as has been mentioned, I probably should have sold it..
Ah so it's a cash thing, understandable but that's the price for entrance into the VAG club.

Perhaps the garage owner is leaning on your acquaintance? Probably a bit cynical of me to think so, but it crossed my mind. If I had a clutch cylinder replaced and it failed again, I'd expect the garage to repair it for free not just at a discount rate. Without knowing the specifics, just makes me wonder a bit.

As the others have said, buy Japanese/Korean and use the cash you don't spend on repairs to get to some events which make up for this year :-)

Pie the little fker off and get something else..

Or start having a punt at jobs yourself.. Ive had one moneypit like that never again.. The key is to keep the purchase price low so if the insolent fker starts acting up you can just jettison it.

My 540i was a near-permanent fixture at Crago's BMW 18 months ago - spent the best part of 3 months there having the gearbox refurbed, then the alternator then a recurring power drain, finally diagnosed as the hedgehog after a few go's (wouldn't always happen so would intermittently kill the battery)

But...but...how can the OP be expected to do without the prestige and quality of a German car? Surely bi-monthly trips to the garage are a small price to pay for the Teutonic reliability and superior engineering he's currently enjoying.

Going by recent experiences I really do feel that VW are massively overrated! My old Mk1 Focus was a much bette built car than the Mk5 Golf I have!
So, a clutch issue which was mis-diagnosed by the garage, twice - Not a fault with the car.
A service - Not a fault with the car.
Tyres - Not a fault with the car.
MOT - A legal requirement for ALL cars. Not a fault with the car.
A boost issue as yet undiagnosed.

Yeah, I can see from that how anyone would swerve a Golf. First world problems.

If its a mk5 golf then im sorry but their a bag of turd.

I had a 2005 2.0 GT TDI in the 1.5 years I had it:

ABS Sensor Failure
Front Wings rusted (Replaced by VW under paint warranty)
ABS Module Failure (Replaced by VW after a lot of arguing)
Corrosion on all wheels
Corrosion on rear badge
Boost/wastegate failure (quick fix meant lubing the wastegate arm)
Irregular engine shaking when idle
Turbo failure (regular diesel engine issue so doesnt really count)
Stuck door handle. (handle cable was damaged.
Door harness broke at the hinge which meant all driver door electronics stopped working.
Lots of wind noise on the motorway (General bad aerodynamics?)
AC stopped working.
High levels of humidity in the car when parked for long (maybe related to above)
Radiator Leak
Intercooler leak (I think this is related to above, although it did not look like anything had hit the radiator/intercooler)
had to slam the boot for it to close

I may have missed some!

The car had a VW service history before I got hold of it so I was lucky to get VW to pay for most of these issues.

And it was not just that my car was a lemon, if you look on the vw forums you will see most of these are common issue on the mk5.

I've had far too many phonecalls like this to a garage:
"I need you to fix *insert really obscure specific component name* please, can you order one for me?"
"Just bring the car in and we'll see what's wrong"
"I know what's wrong... It's the exact very specific thing I said"
"How do you know that?"
"... I broke it."

And for balance, in the 2 years I've had my 2007 MK5 GTI:

1 x Passenger mirror indicator lense / bulb (£22)
1 x Snapped rear spring (£50 and an hour of my time)
1 x Rusty wing replaced FOC

OMG, what a turd. I really must sell it immediately before it's plague rubs off onto me.

We still ask that we can see for ourselves, because when the customer is wrong, which happens a fair bit then we are the ones stuck with the obscure part that the supplier is reluctant to take back.

OP, As someone on the garage end i can tell you there is nothing at all to be embarrassed about. We might get a little anxious that the customer thinks it has something to do with us, but at no point should you feel embarrassed.

I can agree with the frustration part but embarrassment not so much. Cars break, whether used or new. I'm sure the garage wouldn't give two sts either as you're paying them for their services.

I wouldn't care what other people think if that's the issue. Just because it's German and a VW doesn't mean it's "bulletproof" as some people say, nothing is as far as cars are concerned.

Two breakdowns on the way to the garage, definitely time to get rid.

Yep, 3 trips to the garage and the fker is still leaking coolant *sometimes.*

Completely random. Once again the gearbox is covered in pink st, but the coolant level has barely dropped. Getting bored of it now.
