Most fun? Me and a few mates in a jeep wrangler was a great fun hire car to hop in and out of and go to the beach etc.

"I'm sorry Sir, we haven't got the car you ordered. The only automatic I've got is a Mercedes S class - would that be alright?". Made a talking point of the weekend visit to my family! Not exactly exciting, but an astonishingly easy way to cover huge miles.

I am in the US right now driving coast-to-coast (East to West).

Here is my humble little hire car rented through Avis.

Brand new (ie. less than 200 miles on it when I picked it up) Maserati Ghibli Twin Turbo.

Best not ask the cost, especially factoring in the 'One way hire' supplement.

I know the cost because swmbo said after the corvette, let's have that one next shall we. Then I looked it up.... Err yes, but no...

Sounds the nuts in sports mode. The yanks can't get enough of it. I've been stopped so many times by people wanting to know what it is etc

Close between 5.0 mustang convertible, but i'm sure over here the st build and poor bhp to mpg would start to grate but the top spec kia sportage we had in ibiza was seriously impressive so much so we are seriously considering one for the mrs.

Poverty spec hire Mustang V6 ; did 3000 miles across Carolinas, Georgia , Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama in 2 weeks. Thought it would have a gutless wheezy 180bhp or something - instead it had a lovely sounding and creamy 305bhp and effortless go. Nice to dawdle in too - loved it, even though I know I should say it was rubbish and that real men drive V8s etc. Super auto too. Not a sports car per se but a real mile muncher and for lad from a Yorkshire pit village who fell in love with the blues in '68 , driving a bloody Mustang! down Highway 61! through cotton fields! at Clarksdale ! was more than special .

By way of contrast a maximum attack across Raticosa pass in a Panda on 155/80s was fun....

List is 3200 for two weeks, but factor in one way, could be more...

the C7 we had, was supposed to have been 2240 for two weeks, but they offered it at a snip, meaning as above 728 for the fortnight, Im guessing something similar here, best guess, $1k.

Mustang Convertible in Canada, drove through the Rockies roof down.

BMW Z3 Convertible (back in the day). Drove around the South Island of New Zealand one February roof down the whole way.

The latter was the best. A superb experience. Although the Icefields Parkway in the Rockies in the Mustang was very, very special too.

I had an Audi A1 S in the south of France a few years back. Great little car for exploring the mountain roads with loads of grip and decent enough power from it's 1.4T engine.

Audi A1 on the Col De Turini by Alastair Cummins, on Flickr

Since then I have had some staggeringly gutless POS! The year after the Audi I had a 1.2 Punto with about 50bhp at sea level, let alone 2500m up! A year later I had a 1.4TD 208 which had the most lag, for the least amount of power I have ever experienced!

What I should have done is the R34 from these guys: http://fun2drive.co.jp/ on the Hakone Skyline this year, Skyline on the Skyline.

What I actually did was the Hakone Skyline in a Nissan Wingroad, which wasn't horrid and at least it was a manual NA petrol.

Booked a C class or equivalent out of Frankfurt airport. Got given a 7 seater Landy Defender with massive off road tires, bash plates etc. Awesome.

Don't often hire cars when on holiday. Tend to avoid driving altogether. Having said that, many years ago I rented a bright yellow Renault Megane convertible to bimble around one of the Greek islands. It was awesome. thumbup

Not necessarily the best, but the most curious:

I once hired a Mazda 6 in Ireland with damage to every panel... including the roof(!). Not sure how you managed that one, previous driver, but well-played.

It's enormously liberating, not giving a stuff about the state you return a hire car in.

300c, dodge charger, Audi a8 and then a dodge challenger.

The challenger was my favourite, was only a v6 but one if the relatively new high output v6 models.

A roofless Jeep Wrangler in the Bahamas.

Although the location may have tainted it, but it was fantastic fun.
