When I was saving for my house deposit I ran a Pug 106 1.5D.

Not ideal, but something like that will get you 60+ mpg and not be unbearable either.

The priority here really is just saving some cash, for a short period of time, so less than shed money small diesel, or a bigger one for comfort I.e. Xantia, 406, or a small petrol should do the job really.

The thing with petrols is, even little ones, is if you are running late one day or you generally want to try and keep up with quicker traffic, economy does plummet. In most small diesels you can press on and they'll still give you a good MPG, so should be easier to live with while saving money.
