My old Corsa SRi 1.8.

Never failed to surprise me. Ferocious acceleration, bags of torque.

That was in my boy racer days, now I get honked and flashed for observing speed limits.

How times change, but fond memories of 'Kevin'.
Is that a serious response?
Please refer to the thread title.

Interesting how no-one 'pulled up' the poster that mentioned the Strada Abarth either.....despite it being no faster

1990 something F1 car was the most acceleration I've ever felt. Proper feeling of insides moving about and lots of rude words said inside my lid.

Baaarp!

My modified Monaro's the quickest thing I've been in. Not much good in the wet though.

I still find my CLS to be pretty vigorous, the 350Z was brisk but this feels a lot quicker, next one will be a CLS63
What model do you have? I had the 500. I bought it to be smooth and quiet, but it was surprisingly rapid. I guess the wall of torque does that.
CLS 500 but the later 5.5 with 388 bhp and 391 lb/ft, would be interested to try the AMG ones to see how much faster/different they are.
I only had the 5.0. Your engine sounds like a real sweet spot in barge engines: smooth, plenty of power, yet none of the complexity of a supercharger or turbos.

Didn't they put this engine in the C lass and CLK for a short while too? They must shift! No need to go AMG really.

For me, a 435d. Endless and massive urge (well, for someone used to normal cars not supercars)

Driven - Jag XF-RS 550bhp. Awesome noise and the alarming habit of wheelspining at 90mph+.
Really very quick indeed. If I found £50k I'd have one.

Owned - Saab 9-5 Aero Stage 1.275bhp / 300lb/ft. It's a Saab thing, the numbers don't do the shove justice. Genuinely fast car from 30-100mph.

Been in - Revo Stage 4 Golf R - around Silverstone driven by PH's JD. A good driver in a Very, very quick car. Didn't feel as quick as it actually was. Nothing got near it on the straights and the brakes can make your eyeballs ache.

Fisher Fury Fireblade. Only had 130bhp but it weighed 480kg and revved to 12,000rpm!
Definitely. I had a go in an M5 the other week, which felt like you were being warp-driven towards the horizon, but in my old Megablade the throttle response was so much more instant and violent - it felt more like being fired out of a cannon.

Its the "goes like a scalded cat" specific that baffles me about some suggestions, big fast German metal goes like the Starship Enterprise, not a burnt cat. Super Cars are like Fighter Jets off Carriers, not like boiled moggy etc...

Proper Scalded cat cars are lightweights with ludicrous engines, a Bike engined 7 or similar kit, bonkers hillclimb special or single seater is the only thing that gives the bug eyed- "OhHollyCrapTheyJustTriedToCookMyArse!" experience, its not just the acceleration but the noise, open cockpit, smell and taste in your mouth/sh*t in your pants sensation light, overpowered cars give.

I've seen non-car people be pretty calm in a 4-5second to 60 saloon, but put them in a similarly quick lightweight with their arse 2" from the road, no windscreen and an exhaust a foot from their ear and launch it down a country lane with bees bouncing off their forehead and they think its like being fired from a cannon.

I've not yet seen a roofed/normal car that gives that- perhaps a top fuel funny car?

IanH's Audi RS6.

Even when it had "only" 750bhp it made me giggle like a schoolgirl, never should a (2 ton?) practical audi move that fast!

It turned up in a handful of CLK's, ML's, E classes and S Classes, as far as I am aware it never made it into the C Class, it was more potent that previous generation AMG stuff and I guess showed where the AMG power outputs were heading, where getting on for 400 bhp used to warrant an AMG badge, it is now just a cooking variant figure, though I know there is more to the AMG stuff than just power output, its suspension, brakes, exhausts and the way the engine is tuned, not just what it churns out, though I quite the big power but no big deal thing.

This thread alerted me to its existence, if RS6 owners are astonished by how quick it is then its probably fairly rapid was my thinking, especially for the money, and its a rather nice car as well, got to work within my means, which for another couple of years are limited by kids !

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=111...

Would love to try the CLS AMG versions though, but part of me thinks it may be the law of diminishing returns, another 80 bhp for the 55, more complexity, the cars are older and more expensive, probably in a lot of cases had a harder life, dearer brakes and stuff and realistically, how much quicker is it and if it is, how much quicker do I need to go, to be hones the CLS is more of a fast cruiser, it isnt a sports car

I know its hardly the fastest thing compared to others but, w220 s500 Mercedes from a standstill, box in sport and foot to the floor, always makes me smile that something this large and heavy can accelerate so (relatively) quickly.
It is not just the numbers but the way the speed is delivered which counts. The vintage on/off Jap turbo delivery is a giggle and certainly the most forceful. But a proper large engine which wafts you up to pace is a lovely experience. Having tried all sorts of things, I now prefer the larger engined route out of all options.
There's no replacement for displacement... Expect displacement with forced induction!

I used to think my Soarer was 'quick' until moving onto a V12TT S600 W220, so 5.5 litres of displacement and relatively small turbos, resulting in an engine that can spam 700+ftlb at 2300RPM, and in comparison to the Toyota's 2.5 engine, its bonkers. Even when the power difference was only 100BHP between the Soarer and S600 the Merc felt far quicker despite the BHP/Ton being similar.

Driven an R35 GT-R and McLaren MP4-12C on a track day. Have been obsessed with getting back in a McLaren ever since, will likely never happen though! Drove a Tesla P90 in ludicrous mode once as well, that was astonishing.
