Also, I think cars are affected massively by the context they are in, stick a C63 in downtown Levenshulme with its gaudy shops, relaxed attitude to traffic laws and general air of chaos and it looks a bit unseemly, stick it outside a Cheshire Wine bar and it looks less like the local geyzers chariot, even though it is probably driven by some awful tosspot, quite possibly a criminal as Cheshire is full of dodgy characters, they just blend in.

Estates. There is no reason to get a saloon.

As has been alluded to I think its only the coupes that attract the chavs. Not seen any estates or saloons driven by anyone who looks out of place.

Even amongst the coupes it seems to be the ones with black wheels that attract knobbers

I've seen plenty of standard C63 getting ragged up 30mph high streets and back roads at roughly double the limit. All had standard silver wheels.

For the record I have had matt black wheels on many of my cars since I first ordered a new Lotus that way. It means never having to wash them! I think my hatred of washing wheels started with an original Golf R32. If you've owned one you'll know what I mean!

I opted for the estate, so seem to be in good company.

Not long after I bought it, I was driving through a Mersey tunnel when a black C63 coupe came alongside, clearly in neutral & revving away happily. (I was driving my wife's Leaf, which amused me at the time.

Coincidentally (or not), the following week a supermarket delivery guy who enjoyed chatting about cars mentioned that his mate had just bought a black C63 coupe the previous week, drove it like a prat and had come into contact with a lamp post two days prior.

Hopefully insurance companies will treat the estate separately when it comes to loading premiums.

While waiting for my old school Mercedes to be serviced at a main dealer I strolled around forecourt & was so disheartened by what I saw. I totally agree with the posting headline - Mercedes HAS gone downmarket loading every car with acres of bling, blobs of chrome, great big lumps of plastic air dams, all to camouflage that the cars are ugly dumpy & SO in your face.
Treading on eggshells here & taking the 'council estate' reference further they ALL look like the sort of transport favoured by those whose other form of transport is usually a very shabby un-taxed uninsured nil MOT'd Transit van or pick-up with tow-bar, if you get my drift.
I hate to say it for I never have wanted to be a BMW Driver, but the current range of Beemers are elegant compared with Mercedes.

Council or not. The blue metallic C63S Saloon that was running up and down the Goodwood Hill on the weekend looked and sounded fantastic.

Pretty much sold itself to being next car IF I can afford one regardless of council image or not..

Mercedes always have been the Chav weapon of choice here in the Essex Badlands.

It'll usually be a stone rashed black one with heavily curbed alloys, two bald tyres and an illegal numberplate parked in the disabled bays at Asda or Iceland by someone still wearing their pajamas at 11am.

This is most unfortunate. I wanted one as my next car. Won't stop me though as I know I'm not council and don't give to sts what people who dont know me think!

I've never seen a C63 being driven by a pyjama wearer, although TBF I've never been to the Essex Badlands. Or the Goodlands either that I know of

The styling and sound deadening are good reasons.

Haha I was going to say, it's sadly been in favour with the 'wrong crowd' for a little while. Which is a shame as I think they're great cars but they just suffer a bit of an image problem.

Any of the other '63' models still keep their credibility, E63 is a cool car, I own a CLS63 so obviously thats even cooler haha But the C has got a bad rep from drivers revving the t*ts off them in public places and being found up the chuff of super cars usually in the middle of London.

yes It's slightly saddening that the German marque responsible for some of the most restrained, elegant car designs has now resorted to manufacturing car shaped vajazzles.

Nile Ranger drives a C63 saloon which probably answers the question...

Id still love an estate though.

Unfortunately it happens to most decent coupes sooner or later. The ingredients seem to be.

1) Epic depreciation as it quickly puts it within means of unsavoury types
2) Right "premium" badge.
3) Doesn't change too much between model years or face-lifts i.e. most German cars so they can put a private plate on it and pretend it's new and hence worth a lot more than it is.
4) Has an abundance of power and a loud exhaust
5) Available in all black for the "gangsta" look although white with black wheels is also acceptable but HAS to also have the optional privacy glass fitted or else it gets applied (badly) afterwards by a mate.
6) If neither of the two colours above are available for the right price, it will get wrapped (badly) by the same mate who did the tinted windows (badly) in a variety of colours but it HAS to be in that matt finish that looks like someone forgot to add the lacquer to the paint.
7) The accelerator will then be treated as an on\off switch for maximum acceleration\kangaroo effect every few yards.
8) Will soon end up with mismatched tyres when it inevitably gets a puncture from smashing into curbs etc and it will never be serviced while in it's ownership or at best the mate who did the windows and matt wrap will service it (badly)
9) Will get crashed, get repaired (badly) by the mate who did the windows and wrap then sold to an unscrupulous dealer who will give the mileage a shave, loose what paperwork if any was leftover from the previous owner and then sell it on to the next wrung down of undesirable owner or more likely a PH'er looking for a bargain.

Have I missed anything. biggrin

Steer clear of black or white ones and you'll be in the clear. It also absolutely has to be unmodified visually. Standard wheels, no tints, no stuck on carbon bits, etc. You have to keep it in great nick as well with decent tyres.

That should be enough to clearly separate you from the chaff.
