I suppose your not going to bother with the second part of my question.

Aircraft navigation and flight display systems are typically certified to at least DAL C many functions and their parts to B or A.

Your response only indicates that you have no idea what an autopilot is or does, or why its safety is so critical.

There are plenty of threads on various Tesla forums about the definition of the word 'autopilot' and reasons why it should or should not be used in this context.

I was hoping I wouldn't see a repeat of them here, as they're all a bit pointless.

Autopilot in planes is just something that keeps the plane on a particular heading, perhaps even changes between waypoints. Didnt normally have collision detection etc built in.
The ability of aircraft autopilots varies considerably, but on large airliners they can do far more than just cruise on a heading e.g. they can automate the entire landing procedure. Automated collision avoidance systems for aircraft have been around for a good 20 years.

Dictionary definition of autopilot, 'a device that steers a ship, aircraft, or spacecraft in place of a person'

Nothing about doing far more than that, I'm sure they do now, but didnt when first introduced.

Seems the term as defined suits the tesla software as it stands.

Since the capabilities of autopilots have hugely increased since their introduction, it's not unreasonable to think of those capabilities when the term is used, rather than the most basic first generation devices.

Irrespective of their description, Tesla have a system that invites people to treat it like a self driving car when it clearly doesn't have that capability. An autopilot system that requires the same amount of sustained concentration as if you were driving is pointless, and it should be pretty obvious that the majority of drivers won't put that level of concentration in when it's engaged. Launching a half arsed system like this was a stupid move by Tesla, the implications were obvious at the time.

But aren't accident rates lower in cars with the autopilot feature?
