Gordon Murray was 70 last month. Guess what he bought himself.

Get a grip young people. It ain't age anymore, it's attitude.

I came on some good financial fortune at the age of 68 so treated myself to a Nissan R35 GTR. Three years later and still loving it. Only trouble is the old gits on the road.

The question is which station? The offensively expensive Texaco or the much more reasonably priced Morrisons?

My mum had a 500 Abarth as she wanted a 500 but was coming out of an E46 M3, so my dad wanted her in the 'best one'. Then it was decided it was a little much and she didn't like the convertible, so she has a Twinair. I think that's the case. An older lady wants a cute hatch but her husband wants the best one for her. Many years ago something similar happened. A neighbours mum wanted out of an older ranger rover and decided a 3 series would be nice. So her husband bought her an brand new E30 M3! Madness.
The 'best' in those circumstances was left hand drive?

Assuming you're in a right hand drive country, that sounds like the most annoying and least convenient for an older person.
You'd be correct on both counts. This was in Berkshire, around '98. She loved the thing, it was always immaculate and she had it from new until she had to pack in driving. They're a family of petrol heads were partly responsible for sparking it in me when I was younger.

You're the right age for a taxi driver, so that car suits you well.

Agree on the attitude thing. Or rather, fark them and buy/drive/do what ever feels fun and right. I'm pretty sure my last car will be a hot hatch.

Curious though (if that's not overly nosey) -- what did Gordon get? Nothing new out there that is 100% aligned with what I would guess is a taste favouring light weight, efficiency and pace. They never made that XL-1 with the Ducati engine or a gen. 1 Insight Type-R wink...

Good choice

Although I'm biased, I'm a 58 year old granddad driving a JCW Clubman, mapped to almost 280bhp, lowered on adjustable coilovers + a few other performance mods, has been on track at Brands & regularly at Santa Pod thumbup

Loving it

A Lotus 11 and a speed boat with wheels (so you can drive to the pub, or onto a beach etc...)

Old? Well I'm 43 and I've got one too. It's because:
a) it's hilarious fun on the back roads
b) it's the price I pay to keep my campervan on the road

I'm 48 and drive a BRZ. Before that I had an Integra Type-R and an Impreza P1 (when I was 45). I've just ordered a Golf R Estate (which I suppose is an old man's hot "hatch").

I drive a fiesta ST and see so many drivers who are 40+ and I think it's great! Also shows how good the car that it attrcats that age group still.

42 and just purchased a chav wagon. Bought a house down some narrow country lanes recently, needed something to carry the dogs about, to carry firewood and to get along the roads in the winter, so I thought the sensible option would be a Forester STi.

Now, where did I leave my baseball cap?
