Dodgy video, but well enough done.. It's certainly not an easy thing to do.

I like the Fiat/Abarth more and more actually. I think the Mazda looks stonking in the flesh (that old, thin sheet metal over a chassis thing that old British sports cars had), and I love how the exhaust is just, an exhaust(!), but the Fiat looks pretty cool too.

It looks a very convincing little car actually.. It has the engine 75% of people will want; it'll feel faster and be faster most of the time, and it's apparently just a little softer and more relaxing... Perfectly European actually. If I had to choose one, I'm genuinely not certain which I'd choose. I'd probably go mx5 for the response and sound, but there'd doubtless be plenty of days when I just think the Fiat would be cooler.. Mazda try, but Fiat are effortlessly cool. Small, cheap, modest and Italian. You could see people from all walks of life driving a 124 down the Amalfi Coast.. I wouldn't be surprised to find a Hollywood star in one, but I'd be very surprised if they were in an mx5. I mean this in a good way.

Yep, I'm a judgemental tt. In a good way though. I enjoy others success.

On the standard car yes; Abarth gets a locking one.

Quite a few uncalled for comments here!

Dan is fine!

I dont mean like....fiiiiine...you know.

He's just fine on the review, he's 'real' and just being himself!

I can't help being a bit 'meh' about the car though.

i liked the video!

its a nice looking car - i can imagine a large portion of the (mainly female) 500 drivers might see this as a natural progression for their next car.

Its £23,295 for the 'Anniversary' version. Thats a lot isn't it.

Carwow has produced a discount of £92 so far hehe

I wonder when the Abarth version is arriving?

I like the Fiat 124... but I'd have to get the Abarth. I don't think I could live with myself having the basic one.

Would welcome seeing more of this kind of thing on the roads, though! As long as I was in the Abarth one...

I preferred this review to the Chris Evans segments of TG, for what that's worth, Dan.

Why?

Open top sports cars like this arent about power, they're about fun!

September/October according to my Abarth dealer.

I like it, and seeing a picture of the original '124, it really makes sense of the current model's styling..
I don't think the MX5 is bad looking but it's very 'modern-japanese' looking. This is..........different..

The Abarth model (possibly without speccing the contrasting bonnet & boot colour) looks very appealing..

I quite like the Abarth-exclusive paint options, and I struggle dreadfully with budget creep for tiny incremental improvements. Also, iirc, the Abarth has an Akrapovic exhaust which sounds quite fruity.

Why oh why do you ALWAYS have to ruin a video with unnecessary trashy music???!!!
Bland corporate-music is the video-equivalent of Troy Queef. You're not the only one.

I will try to avoid You (complete and utter) TUBE! reviews for that reason. Plus it takes 10 minutes of painful panning-padding to deduce what the written word could have portrayed in five.

Fair enough, however £30K for one??

I'm oot.

The extra torque should make it a lot more pleasant to drive than the Mazda version under normal conditions.

My main concern, especially in the UK, would be the quality of support you are likely to get from the dealers. Fiat dealers always seem to have had a terrible reputation going way back. Shame really, as the cars were mostly quite good fun to drive.

The official (!) Fiat ad for this car. Classy. Tasteful. Italian.

I am going to rush out and buy one after that review (not).

What about the auto (hated by journos but some of us prefer them)?

Looks great - and thank you for a well-made and refreshingly unpretentious review
