200bhp is a little low in today's world of 300bhp hot hatches but I could live with it. What I can't live with is the characterless nature of that engine. If it had a 200bhp Honda Vtec type unit which screamed to 8krpm it would be brilliant. A turbo version would be nice as an alternative choice for the power hungry but they really need to do something about the dull standard engine. The Cosworth tuning package livens it up considerably by all accounts, not sure why Toyobaru just don't offer something like that from the factory with a warranty.
that's a better criticism. it works well 5 - 7.5k, which if you like NA cars and using the gearbox is fine, but before that it's a let down totally agree. A better exhaust would be a simple fix to the mood of the car if legislation permitted.
Indeed - it's a perfectly fair point well-made.

Even though personally I find the FA20 preferable to any engine with a turbocharger - or any without spark plugs - which seem to be as close as some people get to automotive Shangri-la.

Looks like there are a few NA tuning options for them now which seem to eliminate torque dip, give it an 25 extra bhp and make it rev\sound better which sounds ideal. It's just a pity all will write off your warranty.

I thought the whole point of this car was that you can tune it to your tastes. The manufacturers are missing out IMO, they really should be offering warranty backed tuning packages by now.

It's hard to believe these have been around for 4 years now! Second hand ones can be had for about £9-10k with very reasonable mileages!

This is exactly right. The one I drove sounded awful, like trainers in a tumble dryer, and wasnt anywhere near fast enough for the engines claims. Had no midrange but no top end rush like VTEC civics. I know its not a straight comparison but i`d have an old integra type R over this all day long even if it is wrong wheel drive.

Sadly its to expensive and not worth the effort to buy one and mod it to be good. For the money you get get something to mod which was much more worth while. For me this should be a choice for a fun daily driver to have with a silly second car for weekends etc but its not enough fun and to expensive.

I've always liked these and even more so now. Thank you Toyota for making them.

Genuinely wonder if I am indeed logged on to PH some days.

Next someone will think it should be equipped with 4wd to make it more competent on our often damp B'roads.

I am seemingly in the the minority who do appreciate the package and Toyota's effort in this cruel world of regulations and price wars. Although I'll admit I would have preferred another 1k added to the redline and a more charismatic exhaust note, I guess once production stops that's when more appreciation will begin.

I'm a fan....well, I would be if they'd had the balls or engineering skill to produce it looking like the concept....

I have owned my BRZ for over 2 years.

It could do with a teensy bit more grunt, but if you think adding a turbo is the answer, you don't understand the car.

I owned a Teg Type-R DC2 previously. Straight line performance is identical, but the BRZ is more fun (because RWD).

I'm considering a GT86 next, budgeting for 18 inch wheels/grippier tyres, Cosworth stg 1.0 and a UEL manifold for that Boxer sound. I like that it has potential to be modified to suit the driver, my only issue is the tendency for the rear to slide sometimes when not provoked.

Disappointing to still see any thread about the Toyobaru descend into 200bhp not being enough for the road.

I guess all the people on the Mustang waiting list need something to do for the next 18 months.
To be fair, it's usually those with generic "premium" German cars making those comments. I wouldn't say no to a Toyobaru or Mustang. thumbup

I totally appreciate the fact that they've gone against the pack and tried to do something different, 8/10 for effort but I just think the execution has fallen a little short. It's been out 4 years and the criticisms are well documented now, just wish they'd taken a leaf out of the GT-R book and made continuous small improvements along the way, we might have ended up with the car we'd all hoped for by now.

Is it any wonder that they don't sell very well when one can buy a wonderful FWD Audi TT with 180 bhp for just £5,000 [plus extras] more.

Speaking as a former max power speed demon obsessive. D'ya know what... All this talk of x00 BHP, LSDs, drift modes an' all that... The roads I'm forced to drive day in day out, this could be just the thing I need.

I test drove one and loved it, I think it would suit a nice oversquare 2.5 version of its N/A motor. Might give it a bit more character, it would spoil the mpg which I remember being very good but who cares about that!

P.S. To all those who like their Audi, VW, Seat and BMW turbos.

In many ways, the GT86 is a very old-fashioned. It's noisy, unrefined, a bit rattley, the interior is good quality but basic, and the gear change can be clunky. If you're used to your toys and refinement, you might not like it.

Great news. Glad they are addressing the big torque dip just where you spend most of the time.

The only real fault with the old one for me. Should hopefully make it feel more responsive on the road in normal driving, like the current 2ltr MX5.

Or not, we'll see.
