I can't really understand why a brand image would ever put anyone off any car, but I accept that it does. Different people have different priorities - for some, how others perceive their choice is a major concern.

...My only worry here is the 6sp DSG rather than 7sp. A car like this is used for long jouneys, so that extra gear on the motorway might be missed.
Skoda only have access to the wet clutch 6 speed DSG and dry clutch 7 speed (for lower powered engines). I imagine you might have been referencing Audi's wet 7 speed, as the lesser dry 7 is not only unsuited to the power train of the 280 but less refined than the wet 6. As I think I mentioned earlier in the thread, despite having the same wet 6 box the 280 has shorter gearing than the 220 to make it sportier. It does sit higher on the rev range as a consequence. My 220 hovers around 1,800rpm at 70mph in top, and I believe the 280 is closer to 2,500rpm off the top of my head. It still returns decent economy for what it is though. Have a read of the 280ps thread on Briskoda for a lot more info. One of the members there (BillyJim) has just completed his latest cross-continental jaunt in his 280 and returned mid-30s MPG even with a lot of spirited autobahn runs. They definitely appreciate 99 RON fuel (they're mapped to 98) and like all higher powered VAG units will produce more power, much better low down torque and better economy on the stuff. It pays for itself.

I love my 220. It - and the 280 - just ideally need a pedal box to tighten the response as the factory map is pretty lax. It's night and day difference, and really brings the car alive (again, discussion on the Briskoda thread if you care to read it).
Yes you're right I reference the 7sp in my RS4 which is brilliant with the 4.2.

Thanks for the link. Interesting reading. Apart from the 6sp worry, I've still not read/heard anything that puts me off. I've also found the options/pricing listed on DTD who are offering 10-15% off which will make the depreciation more manageable.

The Superb MK2 (2009-2013) and facelift version (2013-2015) had the 6sp wet DSG. Very few known problems providing the box is serviced at approx 40k miles (fluid and filter). The 7sp dry DSG, fitted on later mk2 face lifted cars and other vag group products had more problems (Google it...) but I hope most issues have been sorted with the Superb 3.

Certainly, a white 280 sport line estate with DSG is a lovely thing for the money...even better used in a couple of years I hope.....

There are some very reasonable deals on the top spec Estate 280 if you don't mind a demonstrator. An L&K is for sale for £28,995, more than 8,000 saving from new.

Unfair, we are on a car enthusiasts website. Of course emotions are important to our choices.

Saw my first 280 sport line at dealers today. Absolutely cracking looking thing and interior is a lovely place mostly done in alacantra. Got my name down for a test drive as soon as they have a demonstrator. It's pricey though, especially with a few options. I'm expecting a significant discount if I go for one.

The dealer really struggled to get a 280 for me to drive. However, two drawbacks... as I suspected the gearing means that on the motorway it's high in revs. Secondly the 'urge' isn't there from the engine. It's a smooth progression rather than sporty progression, if that makes sense. So whilst on paper it's similar, if you you compare it to the Golf R Estate setup of the engine, it really is night & day difference.

Mmmm.... Well a couple of points. The Superb is not competing with the Golf R so I don't think its a fair comparison. Also cant agree with you about the getup and go. I've been in my mates Golf R a fair bit. Were you in manual using paddles or sport mode ? It's certaintly not a smooth progression in mine if you press the pedal to the metal.... I've had passengers literally curse at the 'urge' when I've planted it.

Thats very cool!

Amazing what an AWD system will do for your 0-60 times. Even with only 360ish bhp, it is utterly trouncing my RWD Mustang 0-60, and I (at that point) had approx 100bhp more!
DSG helps too!
