RE: Skoda Superb 280
Discussion
One of the few things the TFSI really has going for it is that it's reasonably quiet and smooth. A multi-cylinder engine would undoubtedly be nicer, but if I had to have a four-pot in a barge there are plenty of far more offensive engines in far more expensive cars. It is, IMO, a poor engine in anything pretending to be sporty but it's a pretty effective way of getting a car to move with the minimum of fuss.

Mmmm.... I think Seat, VW and Audi may not agree with you ...Mistrale said:
Silly question - maybe not a 'Pistonheads' question, but I heard somewhere that the gearing was really short and as a result, the 280 4x4 drank fuel! How are you getting on? Would love one for my motorway commute to replace my BMW 125i!
The gearing in my 280 is a little short for a barge (70mph in top is approx 2,500rpm), but the economy seems to be not too bad - it's better than the S3 Saloon that preceded it. I'm getting 36-37mpg overall (measured over full tanks. The OBC seems about 10% optimistic). My driving is 90% 70mph motorway runs though.
That's on 95RON too - I'm not allowed to buy anything else on my fuel card.

I know sleeper must be discreet, but this goes well beyond that, past boring and well into wallpaper paste bland territory. Shame.
That's precisely the point. Most people are bored into not noticing. It's like the anti-Civic Type R.
That said, if I had the funds for a discreet fast VAG car, then mine's a Leon Cupra ST with the badges removed. Lighter, still spacious and cheaper... for now, at any rate. Whether it stays cheaper second hand remains to be seen.

I'm not sure you'll get much by remapping a mainstream engine which is already putting out 140bhp/litre?
Interestingly, looks like they have some headroom with the E888. They are running that thing stock with 220 (GTI, Octavia) to 290+ (Leon, Golf R) PS and some high profile German tuning shops (including Abt, pretty close to VAG) list possible gains between 50 and 70 PS and roughly 430 Nm optimized. It's just software as well. Assume since it has direct injection there is enough leeway with the stock stuff for getting fuel into it. 98 octane maps though.
But not sure I would bother on the Superb. It's not a sports car, does not want to be one, already has enough power as is. More fun/appropriate to turn a modest VRs Octi or Leon into something a bit quicker...

Presume this replaces it, but they did do these with the R36 lump in them and I imagine they're quite the bargain now. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...
Given that 8-out-of-10 Superbs are diesels and most of the rest are <2.0 you might have to search...
Let's hope they don't turn into the mobile electrical nightmares the last models did (they like to flood their BCUs leading to allsorts of random problems - usually annoying, occasionally serious)
I've always wanted a 911, a ferrari 308, or an NSX and Esprit for that matter. But I am 6'7" and I don't fit in any or them. Thank God I can now buy a family estate with a turbocharged 4 pot. It might be a little bland but I can get a fridge in the back and it has an angry face with look at me LED's.

Business partner has a superb estate albeit diesel
Not many ads you can have a driver at 6 foot 8 and still have a passenger the same size comfortably sitting behind them
Utterly massive inside and thoroughly dwarves my mk5 Mondeo estate for interior and luggage space and the Mondeo isn't exactly a small car

That's ace, but I'd take a Volvo equivalent personally, having had two modern ones that have been excellent.
I was in Prague last year and almost every taxi is a Skoda, we took one (a Superb) from the airport into the city and the leg room in the back - unbelievable stuff, you could have had a party in there with room to spare, it was comfortable too.
Being a petrol they'll sell about six of them I imagine, but I'm glad it exists!

Things have got more interesting. There will be a sportline version and it looks great with loads of kit.

There is a middle ground between shouty (Civic) and bland (this Skoda) and that's where You and I are looking for a sleeper.
