This morning I finally got to drive a couple of VW Golfs, and I wanted to share my thoughts. (sorry for long post).
Great summary. I've driven neither but I have done over 60k in a GTD and it's a far, far better car than it needs to be. It's a bit softer and probably a bit nose heavier than the others but the steering is very good, the turn in brilliant and the diesel is gloriously responsive. Nice place to spend time in, too. I'm really not looking forward to giving it back
I can't imagine needing more than a decent 10 year old car offers. I can well do without the added complexities and their inherent weaknesses and compromises.
I'm skimming over the gloriously responsive bit, you heretic.
430 cars. 150 motorcycles. 60 boats. Plus the automobilia.

That's right - if you had the optional forged wheel ( rather than cast ) though, they came in a staggered set-up with same size 235/40 x17s all rounds m said:

You might be getting the EVO Sunflower 2s staggered ( type 39 ) confused with the earlier Sunflowers non-staggered ( type 22 ) maybe?I had no idea the E36 M3 came out with the same size tyres front/rear. I'm sure there was an option for a wider rear? I know the E34 M5 had and I'm sure (yikes, 22 years ago) that a friend's dad's brand new M3 in 1994 had wider rear wheels. I guess it might have been just the stagger...

I'm going to need your help to ID an old Ferrari if and when I eventually get round to capturing a shot of it.
There's a chap I see a couple of times a week pootling about, around our bit of Lake Geneva, in what looks to me like a 250 SWB Berlinetta (sp?). But that'd be nuts, right?!
So I'll do my best to get a piccy and you can tell me whether I'm going mad. Hope that's ok...

Do you still have the Golf?

Of course chum, look forward to seeing the picture(s).
Do you still have the Golf?
No. Sadly not. It was sold early last year, partly to make way for a more appropriate family wagon and partly because it disgraced itself by throwing a series of (relatively) big bills - welding, starter motor and alternator, an so on - and developing a habit of failing to proceed. Getting a push around Sloane Square from two policemen was a defining low point. Do you still have the Golf?

I'm still waiting for them to bring the Yorkshire moors just that little bit closer, because they look like roads I could find something to do on.
I drive the Cayman home via the moors. Great fun!I'm still waiting for them to bring the Yorkshire moors just that little bit closer, because they look like roads I could find something to do on.
Try Scotland.
Try Ireland
(Actually, on second thoughts we do have something of a pot-hole epidemic here right now)
