For £100k if you want digital (ie paddle shift) there is nothing to touch the 12C. Might have to up the budget to £115k for a good one, but what is £15k when you're spending £100k?

So threadit's, where does your hypothetical 100k go for something fun these days?

For me it'd be either GT4, V12 Vantage or GT3 but interested in your thoughts?
New or used? Personally I struggle to imagine a scenario where I buy a "new" car at all, nevermind putting 100k in to one.

For 100k I'd be having a few cars and would rotate the fleet periodically. What I would start with varies by the minute.

I'd probably go for a 997gt3. Or maybe a 12c. Or maybe a 991 turbo. Or...

I'm not sure I've driven any of them though - I guess the first thing I'd do is spend plenty of time having a few test drives.

I'd take one of these brand new, I think in Sport Ivory with aubergine leather.

A 400bhp engine rebuild and some new suspension for this:

The rental of a spanner monkey, and a tour of the race tracks of Europe.

And maybe some tyres.

Sod wasting that on a road car.

Curiously enough E36's have been on my recent radar with this splendid looking (and probably not limping) 3.2 recently find a new home on the Register forum...

(Although I would restore ginger and 17" Classics rather than the 18" crinkle cuts)

Slightly O/t, there are now well over 100 new shape Focus RSs on Autotrader.
I have been following the ads, many private cars with no miles now offered at/near list, hoping to get out or flip now there doesn't appear to be a premium paid?
A cursory glance seems to indicate mostly main dealer cars, with a couple of thousand miles at around list - presumably all ex-demos. The only way is down price wise with that amount of cars on the market.

Was thinking the first two, throwing c£100k at a boggo 993/964 would just make me hate myself for not getting one before they were deemed an asset class.

I have come to hate any car with a thick rimmed steering wheel.

I miss my puma(s).
BMW seem to have lost the plot with this.
That's one of the things that always strikes me when I clamber behind the giant carbuncle that is the 355 airbag steering wheel. Just how thin the rim is. (fnarr etc).
E46 is much more chunky.

I got a good drive in the 'grale again this morning and have a few further observations.

In line with current thread topic, the steering wheel is great - it's thin and despite being old and a bit scratched, it just feels right

You can't see the dash - typical 80s Italian ergonomics - I can't see most of the speedo and rev counter because the (lovely) steering wheel is directly in the way. As I don't know the car that well yet, I think I'm still not using the top 1500 revs or so - and even doing that it still feels quick.

The pedal layout is all wrong - I find it impossible to toe and heel as the brake is an inch or two lower than the accelerator (and that's before you brake) - I was pushing along a bit this morning on one of my favourite local routes with very little traffic , chucking it round roundabouts, etc. - at the end of the journey i was thinking that I might have to cut off the accelerator pedal and weld it back on in a more sensible position!!!

On slippery roads, the car is disappointingly understeer-y - it's still lovely to drive, but on the wet, cold slippery tarmac today, it feels like it should be channelling an extra 30-40% of the power to the back wheels away from the front. When I've driven it in the summer, it feels perfect. Obviously the old school diffs aren't quiet as clever as all the new-fangled e-diff stuff, but it's still a bit disappointing.

Other than that, though, it is still an awesome analogue car that I love!

They're tyres I hadn't heard of before called BF Goodrich g-Grip.

What size are they? A good set of performance tyres could make all the difference.

They're 195 50 on 15 inch wheels.

I've just read a few reviews and they get bad reviews for wet weather handling. I'd concur.

Given the size there isn't a great deal of choice but I'd expect Pilot Sport 3's to be a noticeable improvement-

Same size as a 205 GTI 1.9 so probably cheap as chips to replace.
