I don't generally read many project/rides threads, but this is my favourite

However, you may need to appreciate the lower end of the automotive sphere from the late 70s onwards to enjoy it.
Wow - that is one thread. I've started reading it - I love what he's doing - impressive skills. The subject cars always being bought for £200 or less seems to make it more impressive!!http://m.retrorides.proboards.com/thread/37171/xbo...

Evening all, planning ahead for an upcoming condundrum in the New Year. £15k will be at the ready for a weekend car, current list is:
- Z4MR
- 987.1 Boxster S (3.2 as to avoid bore shenanigans)
- 987.2 Boxster
What else are you thinking for this sort of device?
Will be looking at very similar soon but also needs to double up as a 2nd useable car not just weekend toy, also added to the list - Z4MR
- 987.1 Boxster S (3.2 as to avoid bore shenanigans)
- 987.2 Boxster
What else are you thinking for this sort of device?
- manual E46 M3
- 996 3.4 Carrera 2/4
I drove a 2008 987.1 Boxster S 3.4 yesterday and was impressed but think I will pursue a 3.2 to try avoid bore scoring issue, around £13k level, keep getting drawn to E46 M3 also only driven one once many moons ago so need another go.

Also looked at some nice E46s (on 18" wheels obviously), but while I don't need back seats, ruled it out. RS4s aren't far off budget, but they are fundamentally a saloon at the end of the day.- manual E46 M3

I've not had my 987 for long but I reckon it fills this brief better than being an out and out toy.- manual E46 M3

What do you think of the 2.7 engine ? I guess while not quite on the pace of the 3.2 I've read it's a nice free reving engine with potentially less issues and some prefer it because it lends itself to be driven hard ? Appreciate what you said above but is it a car you would still get up to drive on a Sunday morning just for the sake of it ? Edited by TheRocket on Monday 10th October 17:45

Yes, for sure.Edited by TheRocket on Monday 10th October 17:45
In all honesty I'd prefer something quicker and would prefer an S but that was always likely to be the case coming from an M5. If it's quicker than my Clio I can't tell- not that the engine isn't a peach of course. Around 4800rpm is where it becomes a much angrier howl and it does beg to be thrashed, very happy to stay high in the revs.

Thanks Chaps
Apologies Matt for slight hijack of your post, ref Elise you should definitely have a go, I love mine but for reasons I mentioned earlier it has to go and it's not what you might call a standard car with associated running costs... plus with hindsight I need something a bit more usable for a few years. £15k should however buy a very nice S1 160 or 111s or perhaps an S2 111R.
I know what you mean about RS4 I had B7 estate which was a very accomplished steer but I don't recall I wanted to drive just for the sake of it, engine was the stand out feature for sure.
Moose, Patrick, Sato thanks for thoughts, ref 2.7 need to go and have a drive of one before I commit down the 3.2 route.

If you're willing to splash a bit more cash (>£375, that is), then this one looks good. 37k mile. £800.
That's one I've seen recently, young lady driver. Looks like it has been snapped up by a local dealer and doubled in price.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2016...

Wow! I've been thinking about an engine transplant into my E280 W124 and then that pops up! Not mad on the bodykit but love the wheels. Needs a V8 though. The 3.6 wouldn't be a big enough increment over my own humble 190bhp, I'd want a near-as-dammit doubling of power and torque which I think you would get from the W210 5.5.
Still cool though.
