The 4.8is badge has always seemed a good thing!!
I'm fairly sure there was somebody on PH who had had a couple new and he was strongly of the view that the engines are not all the same. A good one being a wonderful thing but a duff one rubbish.
I don't think I've ever driven an x5. If I was in the market I think I'd prefer a supercharged full fat Range Rover. No idea how they compare in price though.
The first time I saw/ heard a 4.8is I was looking around the car park for a muscle car! Sounded great.I'm fairly sure there was somebody on PH who had had a couple new and he was strongly of the view that the engines are not all the same. A good one being a wonderful thing but a duff one rubbish.

I was in an underground near Salford Quays. I saw the x5 and ignored it for a second until I realised there were no other likely suspects.

No... RHD deliveries were 4 in the UK, 1 in Japan
Could anyone suggest a likely hammer price? As it's not traditional Alpina color combination it could potentially attract less interest.

am liking that blue Caterham Crook posted a lot, looks like good value for its spec. Don't see the appeal of an early X5 at all... Later ones have more width and 7 seats to justify over a 5 series.
Unfortunately my track day at Silvrtstone on 17th Dec is off, had to have an operation on my hand so no driving for at least a month. Plan is to reschedule in Feb
it took me long time to type that!!

Good cars the 4.8is. Go like stink, sound like a NASCAR, eats fuel and tyres faster than you could throw buns to a bear. Pal of mine has one. He used to run the doors to the local clubs, has teeth like tombstones, and a massive skull inked into most of an arm.
I'd really quite like one, but all I'll say that he really suits the car, and the car really suits him.

I know! It was too much for me as it needs a bit more on top.

For sheer sts and giggles BMW is yet to make another SUV like it. Still the second fastest normally aspirated SUV ever made - only the 2012 Cayenne GTS beats it by 0.2 secs. There is something quite comical in feeling the 4.8 beginning to come on cam around 3000rpm, which is 90mph. Cruising at 120mph is effortless if a little bit hurting on the wallet, but my brother has had the same "issue" with his Cayenne Turbo S. Had a 2008 Cayenne GTS lined up as a replacement, but then realised that the X5 is still the better car as far as driving was concerned. Moreover, they come loaded with kit, which is still useful - panoramic roof, good Bluetooth, Logic 7 audio, air suspension etc. So now, I have to quadripple the budget and go for a 2012 Turbo in order to actually "upgrade"...I'd really quite like one, but all I'll say that he really suits the car, and the car really suits him.
Picked up the Integrale this afternoon. It now has a fresh mot (no advisories) and it's had a proper polish... (thanks Loon!!)
Just took a couple of scenic routes then a thrash round the M25 and home. It's such a great car. Happy to keep up with anything in the fast lane of the motorway, happy to be thrashed and chucked around the back lanes. I love it. I can't imagine how good this must have been in 1989 (when I was lucky enough to have an Austin Metro!!)

I was passed by a chap in a BMW M240i xdrive earlier, absolutely flying. It sounded nice, looked ok and (judging by the way he came out of the last roundabout) seemed to grip and go in a manner worthy of further investigation. Whilst no doubt a million miles short of the character of that beautiful Lancia, it did get me wondering whether it wouldn't be an absolutely corking daily driver and made me happy you can still buy small, petrol powered, mad-quick 4wd cars.

No such thing in the UK, unless you're not in the UK or you saw a LHD one?Edit: Ah Switzerland, makes sense

As I was bombing along yesterday it did cross my mind what the modern equivalent would be. I thought a Golf R might be close - it certainly has the power and grip to outdo most normal cars but it was nowhere near close in terms of involvement... maybe an m240ix has more involvement.Or maybe the reality is no modern car can match it...!

Suspect it's the latter! Or maybe the reality is no modern car can match it...!

Oddly, you don't see many Golf Rs out here. The Swiss haven't had the same crazy-cheap lease deals as in the UK. The S3 seems the more popular choice out here, but they do love their xdrive BMWs.

Or since the 90s, really.
Modern cars are impressive in their efficiency but fk me, the vast majority are boring. I don't think I've owned anything made after 2009. The newest car in my care is over ten years old.

Latest 4WD Focus RS could be considered to be close. No idea how involving it is in comparison though (drift mode not withstanding ).Or maybe the reality is no modern car can match it...!
