Discussion
Due to complicated car circs - W124 off for some jobs, turns out it may be terminal but that's another story, I don't mind ploughing £3.5k into it to keep it going but £5k+ is stretching a point, it may have to go - anyway, one way or another I found myself on Monday morning with a manual 1979 4.7 litre V8 Porsche 928 with no ABS running on Kumho semi slicks as my daily transport.
Thermometer outside the porch said -2. Pitch black.
It's only 4 miles to the railway station but I took it very very gingerly.
However the journey did remind me how much I love this car so a set of winters is being ordered for the teledials and will be fitted asap so I can use the car through the winter.

So threadit's, where does your hypothetical 100k go for something fun these days?
A 400bhp engine rebuild and some new suspension for this:The rental of a spanner monkey, and a tour of the race tracks of Europe.
And maybe some tyres.
Sod wasting that on a road car.
Thanks everybody.
I've done a bit of research now. It looks like 205s are actually the normal fit for Integrales, so maybe I can go up a size from the 195s it's currently on.
Reading a few tyre reviews (which let's face it are quite dull!), and Uniroyal Rain Sport 3 seem to get some good reviews. Any thoughts on here?
As mentioned above, though, there are some great options at cheap prices.
Yes I saw the AD08s - they'd be great apart from the fact I'm looking for better wet weather performance!

Getting better every yearThe autos are great but the manual really opens up the car and lets you enjoy the engine to the full. The 4 speed auto is also somewhat unhappily spaced, missing 3rd gear.
Re the W124. The main radiator fan pulley went, and took the v belt with it. Decided to do the viscous coupling while we were in there. Total with labour and VAT, thick end of £900.
I also hit a deer, and a scuffed front bumper and cracked rear bumper to sort out - just 35k miles worth of parking issues I suppose (my fault). I said let's sort the arches out while we are in there. They said the bill for sorting out the front wings (new wings), new headlamp (deer) and all the above would be another £2700 inc vat. I said yes on the basis that then you have a nicely restored W124 which should be good for the next 175k miles.
Then they arrived at the back of the car to do the arches and found that both rear 3/4 windows have been leaking for a while and it's a mess...
I can't face a £5k+ bill on car worth £4k. The pisser is that they've already done the engine work and started the front. Gah!

Don't think of it as £5k on a £4k car - it's not like you'll be selling it next year (I assume?). In which case, it's £5k for a car that'll see you through another 10 years. £10 a week for that quality of car doesn't seem too bad!Re the W124. Fitted a set to the 125i the day before that monsoon we had a couple of weeks ago - incredibly sure-footed, and a 100x improvement on the old Potenzas I took off.

The steering wheel and gear lever make me want to go on an armed rampage.Other than that, nice.
A very nice colour and imho the pre-Highline cars always look better with the M635CSi front air-dam and later two-piece rear spoiler which this car has been retro-fitted with. As well as the gear-knob and steering wheel the chrome tat around the instruments would have to go, the front fog lights are wrong and the rear panel has been incorrectly re-sprayed.
An OEM analogue clock would be a nice retro-fit instead of the puny digital effort, and given the relative cost of the parts I think he perhaps should have fitted the after-market parking sensors to the front instead of the rear.

Forgot to mention; the 218bhp it is advertised with won't be there, not because of age related losses but because the 2.8 was 184bhp and the 3.5 had the 218bhp. It may not seem a lot but it was nearly two seconds of your time to 60mph back in the day... the day being thirty years ago.
