My 550i really lacks rumble. I know the IS has an exhaust on either side. Is that what it takes to get a rumble in the jungle?
I had a full custom exhaust built for mine by Profusion near Heathrow.Best mod I have ever done to any car!
The original 4.8 V8 X5 also seemed to have a hint of NASCAR out of the box.
You just need around £1k in cash and turn up at your friendly, local, custom exhaust place and tell 'em what you want!

The engine is fairly bespoke - forged crank, forged rods, higher rev limit and higher compression. The exhaust is completely different from the standard X5 and fairly big bore for a serial production SUV

I didnt know this. So if I shoe horned one into my 550i it would go better yeah?
I don't honestly know, but in theory it has higher potential... You would also need someone to map it properly - it would have to be Wayne Schofield or Evolve. I tried a generic remap in mine and also mapped the box, so it really shifts, but fuel economy definitely went down. Also, I think the X5 4.8iS sump is different, as well as the actual intake - it would be a fairly involved project I would say... Cheburator mk2 said:
The X5 4.9iS is an M-car in all but name actually...

The engine was effectively an Alpina unit.
Which X5 had a 4.9 engine?Ahh, the X5 4.8 engine is not an Alpina engine.
The X5 4.6iS engine was a direct copy of the M62B46 single vanos unit developed by Alpina and found in the facelift Alpina B10 V8 models with the same 347bhp, but the X5 4.8iS had a BMW N62B48 double vanos engine developing 355bhp whereas the Alpina B10 V8S had the 4.8 litre 375bhp M62B48 single vanos unit.
Both Alpina engines sound quite NASCAR when provoked.
