A 3.3 would most likely suffice and be easier on the wallet (mostly at the pumps) but that would require a lot more travelling right now to just have a poke around - thoughts much appreciated!
This 3.3 looks nice, might be worth considering if you do decide to go for a 3.3.https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...
Yep done a fair bit of digging into that 3.3 on the register, lots spent on it - just 180 miles away! The 2 aforementioned 4.6 just happen to be the closest at the moment to physically get to and have a look as haven't seen any B10 up close.
ATM the pre-FL touring you speak of is advertised for 14k on AT/PH and I believe is Crombers old car. Rare indeed but not actively after a touring so would rather pay less for a sorted saloon.

This looks good - Mk3 MX5 with the BBR 200 kit and slightly lowered, only £6k:
A nice compromise of something that is useable but light and trackable.
A bit of an updateA nice compromise of something that is useable but light and trackable.
Had a chat with the seller who was as genuine as the car, a 1 way flight to Aberdeen was £60 each so on good Friday mrs wack and I got up at 4:30am and set off, flight was a doddle , 75 minutes as opposed to a 7 hour drive.
Picked the car up sight unseen and it was exactly as described, 11 years old but looks and drives like a new car, 32,500 miles, never seen a winter but it's been breathed on by BBR with their BBR200 kit fitted which takes it for 161bhp to 201bhp, might not sound much but it's a lot nippier, it's also lowered 15mm
We set off into a bright but cool day and spent the next very enjoyable 4 days on the B roads between Aberdeen, Inverness, Oban, Fort William, Glencoe, then down to Glasgow for the last night then home Monday evening .
For anyone that hasn't driven around the Scottish Highlands it really needs to be on your bucket list , the scenery is spectacular, the roads at this time of year were deserted, if I stopped everywhere I saw a photo we'd still be up there
Yes that is snow on the grass next to the road

Gold wheels, love it, JPS is the obvious comparison but I always think of the Walter Wolf Countach which I thought was on a black car but only picture I could find is on this blue one, still works though ! I'm probably in the minority but I liked them in black too..

Chaps, first time posting in this thread, but seems the most apt given I'm waiting on Alpina register approval and I recognise a few of the names from there in here. The family workhorse E39 run for 13 years of its 14 year life has reached the point of chucking money at it for the long haul (ABS ECU fault after all, indy was hoping a wheel speed sensor would fix it because that's what diagnostics threw up... and relieved us of some cash in the process). Looking at the work done so far cooling system hasn't needed doing yet, start of rust in usual places etc. My current thinking is rather than chucking that money on the 520, buy a nice B10 with the work done or chuck the fixing money at that instead for the long haul.
However, I know it's spring and anything remotely interesting these days seems to be priced in cuckoo land (done some digging on previous sales on the register) - E39 M5 asking prices on AT even moreso - what do we think of this silver 4.6 B10 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017... and blue 4.6 at Millenium Heroes: http://www.millenniumheroes.com/cars/alpina-b10-v8... ? A 3.3 would most likely suffice and be easier on the wallet (mostly at the pumps) but that would require a lot more travelling right now to just have a poke around - thoughts much appreciated!
PS ooft, that 7.1 GT3 looks great with the new wheels!
For what it's worth, I think the B10 needs a LSD - Birds do a Quaife that fits, which I briefly considered, but then I chopped mine in for a 1M. The engine is a peach. The sheer muscle of the power delivery never wore off. And it's a super comfy and capable long distance cruiser, but it's no M5 when it comes to hustling down a nice B road.
Millennium have had that blue one for a while, so might be open to an offer. Personally, I much prefer the blue to the silver one.

Having run a 4.6 for a while, go do it. They're surprisingly OK on fuel as you need no revs when cruising. They benefit from a suspension refresh (but don't necessarily need the alpine shocks etc) and the addition of an E46 SMg wheel makes a surprisingly big difference (straight plug and play). ? I loved mine although steering was always a bit wooly. Budget for some bushes and shocks and you should be OK.
the auto boxes can go around 100k mark (usually the forward and reverse drums) which can be rebuilt.
Epic long distance cars IMHO. I miss mine and preferred it to the M5T which followed.

And can attest for the roads up near Banchory / Aberdeenshire. Just keep an eye out for the wildlife!
GT3 looks absolutely superb Braddo
Had an unexpected threp of a new Fiesta Black Edition last week, Ford's madras hatch to the vindaloo ST. Was a bit sniffy at the thought initially, but it turned out to be an absolute marvel down the lanes, with that wizard 1.0 Ecoboost lump and a superb ride/handling combo. Turns out the motoring press agree. Leases are silly cheap, and it'll do 60 to the gallon. Tempted.
The point being I cannot stand black wheels on any car, and couldn't help thinking it would look just the job on weissgold rims...
