I hear you Bungle, thinking along same lines. Decent Rallyes seem a bit far and few between. GTIs are probably easier to procure, but probably not as well cared for.

Ref posts/comments above about car size, the little Fiat Topolino really is tiny and a master of packaging not bad for the 1930's !

The Mini, Porsche 912 and 355 also really stand out as small next to today's cars.

The 340 R had in excess of 250 hp from a Rover 'k' series apparently it took 3 engine builds to get it there, it sounded bloody fantastic for a 4 banger.

Is it one of these engines which tend to be changed alongside every other brake pad change? laugh

Yep to be fair he didn't say how long it could make 250 hp for, probably measure it in hours rather than miles between rebuilds !

should I spend £1000 putting a CSL bootlid and front bumper on my M3?

My mind's telling me 'no' - but my body, my body's tellin me YES (as R Kelly said)

I have never owned a car that brought out the barry in me like this one.

I'm toying with CSL bumper and bootlid, black side grills, back-ambering, you name it...

Jesus man, its your car, do what you want. Its not like the mods are irreversible.
FWIW, I really like the CSL boot on mine. I also really fancy a CSL bumper.

Carbon airbox and decent exhaust make the car in my view. Brakes also.

What is not helping him is that a close friend of mine makes the best Carbon Fiber CSL bootlids, bumpers and wings in the world. Better than the OEM stuff, believe it or not... And a lot cheaper too...

Sorry to take up your time... I'm not sure what I want... I thought this was a forum full of like-minded folk who could help me decide! Jesus indeed

If it's only a grand you may as well chuck them on and see what you think - you might love it, you might hate it once you see it. Nothing to lose.

Cheap, surely, in the context of hugely expensive and complex 80s and 90s classics?

I'd love an 8 series, I really would. I wonder how they stack up against the Porsche 928. The big 8 is one of those cars that I've always fancied with an auto box, but then many people who don't know the 928 say the same about that car, and the manual box transforms it.

The one to have IMHO is the 850 CSi, it had a reworked engine and close on 400bhp. ISTR that the 850i was no quicker than the 840Ci in the real world, a fair bit heavier and a lot thirstier. There was one on C&C a year or so ago for £20k.

Admittedly I can't think of a cheaper V12 with a manual gearbox (maybe some old Jag XJS?) but given these are both project cars how much would they cost to get running/fully recommissioned again? A few years ago a usable car would have been half this surely?

My gut feeling would be that an 850 resto project would be a money pit which would take a significant chunk of time to yield any return. You'd have to want that car and that car only.

I'd rather throw more money at a 928. Pork values continue to go nuts.

To answer your question - the CSi was comprehensively trounced by the 928 in all comparison tests of the period. The only place where the BMW scored well was interior. Not because it was more ergonomic than the Porsche, but because it felt more modern.

In terms of driving dynamics, the Stuttgart chassis developed in 1973-1977 completely obliterated the Munich elefant, despite the trickery of active 4-wheel steer, adjustable damping and the presence of the mighty S70... So the even lesser 850Ci 6-spd would make a great GT, but would never fulfill the Jekyll-Hyde role which the 928 fills so well...

I remember from years gone by when Bramley had one in in black with its subtly flared arches. Was a lovely and expensive thing. Cheap however compared to their other stock of the time that included two Sport Quattros a Daytona Spyder and other assorted unobtanium.

Here's something for transporting things about:

Not sure why he couldn't pull it out of the barn to take a photo though?

Could be (with a bit of work) an ideal camper for a certain French race.

The italic Comic Sans frustrates me.

That typeface just doesn't fit with the Porsche cars or brand at all, for me.

The whole car is bloody awful.

1. Stunning colour in the flesh - I had a Indisch Rot 928, so I speak from experience; yet in the pics it looks washed out and cheap...
2. Very rare car, with an even rarer spec - I have a suspicion it was a press car. Why stick a pair of gorgeous genuine 18" wheels, which while great in their own right only devalue the car?!
3. st aluminium trim. It is just wrong. That's like sticking a tuner steering wheel on. Oh, wait?!
4. No cover on the jump post terminal...
5. Possible CAT D car, but I stand to be corrected...
