Cheers Loon, tbf it currently has 15mm spacers rear and 7mm front on 19inch wheels which really fill the arches well and suit the car, I may go for 7mm all round as the car has lost a bit of it playfulness and wider rear track is making it understeer a little. The Ohlins have really sharpened it up nicely though, and it's now pretty close to how I want it.

I have to blame/credit Moose a fair bit for this car, having read about his over the last few years it fully opened my eyes to them, as a semi modern, analogue mid engined drivers car for £15-25k, they are pretty hard to beat.

It's a car I have been flirting with for a couple of years now and I nearly managed to convince myself that it just wouldn't be worth the heartache (but have still had a couple of dealers on the look out for me!) I've just sold my E30 320is so there is a vacancy as such (misses wouldn't drive it, LHD, dogleg etc). Last night whilst looking at that advert again I announced to all that would listen that this would make an excellent daily driver and offer reliable companionship for many years to come....there may have been a few drinks involved, this provided much amusement to my 'mates'

Does that include the filter change? Is it integrated on the oil pan on the BMW?

I've a disco 3 v8 needs fluid change, I think it's the same zf box?

Yes it's a replacement sump pan which is plastic and has the filter integrated I believe. They also include something called a mecatronic connector as these can fail.

Dunno about the disco but my mate has same box in his 2007 cayenne v8 s.

In other news my Croc now sporting a set of Ohlins Road and Track and a lower ride height, it needs some tweaking on the damper adjustment for general daily B road use but it's now more akin to a Porsche GT product in the ride and handling dept. than before which I am very happy with.

All I can say is do it, with a few tweaks it makes a very good car into a great all round package (so far on mine all I've changed are exhaust, Ohlins suspension and some mods to brakes which are still work in progress) in the U.S. they seem to have a far bigger following than here and substantial aftermarket scene too. Gen 2 cars seem to be quite a rare beast as being launched right into a recession probably didn't help them sell, Gen 1 more plentiful and can offer better value but as Moose has stated many times you need to mindful of the 'big' engine issue and have a fighting fund/contingency if it hasn't been done already.

I just wonder whether the "more of Gen 1's around" and "engine issues on Gen 1" are related? (ie,. there's more engine issues just because there's more of them?). So it's still the same % of engines (Gen 1 vs 2) which have issues? I have no idea, just musing…

I have always wanted one (I even had a deposit on a gen 1 before they came out, but ended up getting bored waiting and got a Z3M instead).

Need to do a bit more research, as I am fairly clueless on prices, I don't really know what's good value and not, but I think (from what little I know) that £20-25k (??) should get me a good Gen 2.

I've been lucky to get my derriere in many and varied cars but I have to say that the Gen II 2.9 Cayman I drove a couple of months back was one of the best 'all rounders' I have experienced. Cracking chassis/engine/gearbox and all round useability.

I also loved my old Boxster 3.2S, gave it up at 120k miles

Bungle from what I know the Gen 2 S 3.4 DFI engine 'should' have all but eliminated the bore scoring issues which is well known on the Gen 1 cars.

However it's also well known that Gen 1 997's suffered the same problems and the Gen 2 997's were meant to address this, but on 997's there has been some talk of engine issues on the Gen 2 DFI... So far I am not aware of the same regarding Gen 2 Caymans but Moose may know more than me. A specialist local to me said the Gen 2 cars are better however issues on these generally focus around engine ancillaries.

Price wise I think £22-£25k should get you a nice higher mileage Gen 2 'S', I paid just under £23k for mine in January from a specialist with approx 58k on the clock and what I would call reasonably well spec'd (PCM3 Nav, Bose, sports seats but no sports Chrono, extended leather or PSE) however it needed a new clutch almost straight away which they dealt with by the specialist. Happy hunting!
