Ouch! They really dropped like a stone for a period! They have recovered a bit recently which is interesting, and are starting to get a bit more pricey.

Trouble is with all the scare stories of the E6x M5, it'll keep prices low for years to come I think.

Every time I drive mine, I am reminded how right Porsche got it from the outset. The two - 996.1 CS K400 and 928 GTS 5-spd would always be the mainstay of my garage.

P.S. Do I feel like a right tool for not buying a W/R 996RS from OPC East London for £52k in Summer 2010 - you bet! Instead I bought E61 M5... Doh!
Didn't realise you had a GT3. Nice - I'd love to hear more about it some time.

I had it for 2 years and it was trouble free except for a voracious appetite for fuel, tyres and brakes :silly However, a friend who runs a MPower specialist says that every week there is at least one coming in with some sort of borkage. More often than not, it is serious. Seems that high mileage does not do them any good - most of the problems funnily enough are electrical - sensors and servo motors. And there are no synergies across the cooking models. So if you SMG pump gives up the ghost - it is BMW only, if your throttle actuator motors go kaput - BMW only etc.

Yep, that's pretty much the measure I got from them as well. If you want one, you need to get one now, and with a BMW warranty that you keep indefinitely.

Shame, as it's an absolutely epic package.

I think Porsche got it spot on - have driven a totally stock and very looked after - 45,000km 996.1 CS and I found it wonderful on the road. Pure, analogue, communicative and compliant. A car which would excite on the right road, but was just comfortable enough not be a ballache on a long journey.

My car - hmmm... I think it actually has gone out of the original remit. Don't get me wrong - I love it, but turning it up to 11 - if you are in a Walter Rorhl mood it works wonders. Taking it to Wales and the Ring brings the biggest grin imaginable, but the journey there could be ahem... Or maybe at 38.75yrs old I am turning into a right old fart....

I like. And you're saving £5k+ vs one with "normal" miles. Use it with impunity.

Mine didn't like being left sat for very long, that would be my only reservation about 1k a year. I doubt you could be that disciplined anyway.

Give it ten years and I think the early kettle GTs will be at similar money too. At this pace, I can see a 996 RS being worth seven digits.

Which means that now might be the time to get into a 996 '3 or '2 (an itch I've yet to scratch) and just lock it away somewhere.

Of course, the world could end tomorrow, making our 993 GT worth about 100 quid in scrap.
I tried to buy a 996 RS in 2011/12. I had to take a punt on some shares to afford it at about £60k at the time.

Long story short, i didn't get my RS.
Ah yes, it was around that time I convinced myself I couldn't justify the spend. Looked at Caymans instead and ended up with an M3 CS.

That was as near as I've ever got to Pork.

Top man. If only you had an other car(s) at your disposal, then that would be the ideal solution.

There's no mention of the suspension being refreshed in the ad. Most Elise will have this done by that milage (with good reason I believe, or could simply be upgrade-itis common amongst owners!). Obviously with a car like the one wants to be sure it handles correctly.

I'd check the state of the rad too. They are quite exposed and prone to stone chips / corrosion. Again, wouldn't be surprised if it is not the original one!

Conspiracy theory alert

'Porsche' goes and buys up all the rare pork at auction under title of 'private collector' at whatever prices (pocket change to them anyway..) which adds even more desirability to the brand, hides it away in a warehouse for 10 years, releases more 'limited' edition cars which collectors snap up but normal customers aspiring to the brand cannot, so they buy the slightly lesser cooking version of the 'normal' car loaded with extras. God I am getting so cynical these days...

Former 996 GT3 mk.II Seal grey owner here and very glad to have done it, sadly only had it for 6 months used mostly on the road but it was fairly epic around Cadwell Park but did destroy a set a front disks (hairline cracks but steel fortunately...) also recently saw it's my actual old car used as the picture on Wikipedia which was a nice surprise.

Doesn't Mr Meaden (from Evo of course) own a 964 RS? Think I remember him paying £91,000 for it (which i thought was a lot!) a while back. Might be wrong of course - memory isn't what i thought it was. But look at that price! £700k+ plus buyers premium I guess.

You're quite right. I have seen Kambites write about the suspension (and other bits) requiring a refresh, so my thinking would be that you buy one that cheap, spend £1-2k getting it up to a very good standard, and enjoy it feeling very fresh!

I have the Audi S1, so need to at least get some use out of that, hence the 1,000 miles idea. Perhaps a little more...

Worth checking the steering rack, too.

Could have said the same for the 964RS though. Also, investment potential blue or red scripty decals must add a quarter of a mil or so down the line.

Cheb you need to hang on to it for at least another 1.25 years. That is when your mid life crisis will truly take hold. Right now - no offense intended - you are just pretending to be old.

No offense taken at all - what is a Mid Life Crisis supposed to bring? Except penchant for younger women silly I have always liked convertibles, but not enough for them to be my main car. Ok, I am lying - a SLS Roadster I could live with. Not a fan of spyder type cars. Big fan of V12 Ferraris, but now out of reach and definitely anti Mid Life Crisis as the "chicks don't dig 'em". The sad truth is that I spotted my first S-class AMG Coupe a couple of days ago and I fell in love with the design and sound.

What is also worrying is that I am and I have always been a confirmed BMW-ista. However, of late, i8 excepted, there is not a single BMW design that I would like to own. Mercedes Benz on the other hand is definitely pulling on my heart strings... Am I growing old gracefully?! That was not part of the plan, I tell thee...

If we all bought cars on the basis of what "chicks dig", then sales of Citroen DS3s would be surging.

If they can't understand the appeal of a V12, they're probably the wrong one.
