An historic 2x2, with the letters first, will usually be worth FAR more than a modern, auctioned release with digits first.
They started issuing them in the 50's as they ran out of combinations so they reversed the sequence putting the numbers first started to run out by the 60's.

X2 on a seriously cut-down 'plate - the car wearing it was a red 2005 Audi A3 3.2. Spotted in Costco in Leeds but the driver seemed to be struggling to find a parking space he liked and eventually drove off before I could snap a photo. Odd really as the the car park was near-empty and he tried at least 3 different spots.

Whats the website where you can find the previously paid prices of numberplates and thier current worth roughly?

At work we have JSB99 which currently lives on the work van!
Sorry to come back on this so late, been on my hols! The website only shows DVLA sales and prices achieved. This is an original issue, no way of finding how much it sold for when transferred - it was issued in 1962 by Glasgow.

Just done a deal on a plate i have wanted for years that came up for sale recently, is there any way of seeing when it was first registered/how much it has sold for previously?

Plate is 79 LG
Issued in 1963 by Cheshire. No way of finding out how much it has been previously sold for, only DVLA auction jobs carry that information.

I've seen that one in Morley before.
One of CRA1G's neighbours I believe.

M3DGE, out of interest if possible, are W 110 or H 14 likely to be early issues?
I've seen both recently and I'm always curious if plates with single letters like that are really old ones or not!

Hello, Wonder if anyone can help, Ive had quite a few number plates over the years and always been able to check on the dvla previous auction prices how much they were originally bought for at auction and which year sold. On my present plate I cant seem to find out this details on the site or any similar low R plates....does any know where I can find out these details please... Any info would be much obliged, 10 R is the plate
I don't think any R plates have been issued by DVLA at auction. They were all issued by the original authority which I believe was Derbyshire.

The DVLA website only shows those sold at auction. Nice plate btw.
Thanks for the info, Im just usually curious where it originally came from and price at DVLA auction usually a nice bit of info to have
Yep, Sue is spot on (as usual) - your plate was issued in November 1962 by Derbyshire. And I add my congrats, lovely plate (and extremely valuable...)

Not really I got my 2x2 for less than 4k last year.
From you gran? wink

Re auctions v original issue, No 2x2 is ever going to be an original issue though is it? It will have been around for decades.

I read that auctions usually go for more as folks are after a plate they've wanted for years.

Online most 2x2 are 20-30K or more.
And yes, there are loads of original issue 2 x 2 s around, there were millions issued so although the vast majority have disappeared there are still plenty left. But because they are so much rarer they do command a premium. That's particularly true for 'letter forward' combinations, all of which were issued before WWII, whereas original 'numbers forward' could be as late as 1964.

A few recent ones from West Yorkshire:
H 14 on a Porsche Macan in Leeds - must be an early issue?
CBC 1 on a 7 Series was parked next to the Porsche above!
LVG 1 on another 7 Series in Leeds, probably not the ex-Man Utd boss!
1 MFN on an Audi RS6 in Dewsbury.

B16 LAD on an Evoque at Birstall McDonalds - not one for the purists, but made me chuckle.
Y4 RNS on a BMW 630i outside Lawton Yarns Mill in Ravensthorpe.
H 14 issued in December 1903 by Middlesex.

And I just saw this, finally worked my way through a month of posts biggrin W 110 was issued in 1904 by Sheffield. All 'single letter forward plates' started being issued in 1903 or 1904. They were used up (ie 9999 was issued) at different rates, from London (A 9999 issued in May 1905) to Staffordshire (E 9999 issued January 1925). 'Reverse' single letter plates were only issued as follows : - D (2-5700 in 1964); E (1000-9999 in 1953 and partially in 1958); F (1-9999 in 1957); H (1000-9999 in 1953); K (1-9999 in 1963); N (1000-9999 in 1959); R (1-9999 in 1962); U (1-9999 in 1957) and W (1001-9999) in 1960. Any other combination is a DVLA plate.

Excellent information, M3DGE - thank you. smile
Seems crazy that these plates are well over 100 years old now.

I've read a couple of times over the last pages about "original" vs "dvla" plates. Both of mine are original issue (1945 and 1953) but is there any difference in desirability or even value?

M6 seen in tesco car park in Wigston, Leicester over the weekend by a friend. I seem to remember this belonging to an elderly couple. It's been on a few fiestas over the years. Definitely a contender for plate being worth more than the car. I for one will be sad to see the day when this ends up on a posh motor as it inevitably will.
