I don't know if this has been posted before, but here is a link to an excellent resource for anyone interested in historic registrations.

Thanks Gunk, that is a useful summary. A few of us geeks on here have some really detailed info on historic plates if anyone wants to know where their plate has come from, and when.http://www.cvpg.co.uk/REG.pdf

I've read a couple of times over the last pages about "original" vs "dvla" plates. Both of mine are original issue (1945 and 1953) but is there any difference in desirability or even value?
I guess generally desirability and value go hand in hand. Original plates are generally more expensive due to their rarity - if you had, say, ABB 612 people might think that plate is quite ordinary, but perhaps only a handful of the allotted numbers survive so if your initials are ABB you might be chasing a rare commodity. However, letter combos with 'undesirable' letters such as X and Y will always be cheaper than others. 1 ABB issued by DVLA will always be worth more than AYX 1.Mr Reg or Primo on here are the real experts on values, but I think the above is a reasonable rule of thumb.
