I'm convinced that number used to be on a Mini up in the NE in the 70's
Could be, was an original issue in 1960

Never been into personal reg no's. But now about to buy an older (classic) car, 2004. Bit bored the other evening, so had a look at personal reg no's. Found one that mixes ny name and the car model. Perfect. The killer? For some inexplicable reason, you can't have a reg that is younger than the car! Now, how ever much I try, I can't think why that should matter. It does occur to me, that that rule is preventing a lot of owners of older classic cars not being able to transfer a number that would be appropriate for them. Another stupid jobs worth rule?

Purely to avoid older cars looking newer, makes sense to me.

Yeah, easy to imagine unsuspecting buyers being fobbed off - "yeah, it's a 2011 61 plate" when the car is several years older.

I guess this is so that its easy to see if a car is stolen.

Its an old idea but there are a lot of older number plates available.

Ridiculous reason. No logic to that. And, in my case, the older plates available just happen to have an extra 0 on the end of the price!!

Not everyone carries out an HPI check when buying a car, so a Mondeo on a newer plate would command more money than an older one and could deceive a potential purchaser.

All very good, but it gives the date of first registration on the V5, and anyone buying without seeing the V5 .......
We have no age identifiers on the plates here in N.I, and unless you are truly sad like I am 99% of the population would have no idea if an ILZ plate was 1991, 2001, or 2011.

Only if you were as thick as a brick. No looking at the MOT history? No Vin number check? No insurance claims? Put the number in an insurance comparison site, that'll cough up the real year. A personal number is always a point of discusion, very rarely are they sold with the car. If you were that stupid, maybe it's better you don't have a car anyway!! I will also add any car I've sold/bought, has a wodge of paper work with it as well, mostly gagarge receipts.
