I thought 'standard plates' were just reserved for the vehicle it came off, working on the basis that the private plate will come off again at some point.
You can take off and transfer any original issued standard plate,it's the replacement dvla issued plate for that vehicle that can't be transferred.

I have just put a private plate on an MR2 that I bought from my MIL.

The original registration is BJ06 PVT.

Rather unfortunate but do you think anyone would buy that? Where would I sell it, if so?

In a word, no.
Did you put BJ06 PVT on retention before assigning your new plate?
I was thinking the same, assuming the owner thinks he may still have rights to the plate automatically when in fact it just goes back into the system. I’m not sure why anyone would pay to keep such a nondescript original plate on retention, let alone try and sell it.

Nondescript? It clearly spells BLOW JOB PRIVATES and is therefore worth £5k to some backwards chav.

Plates, of whatever type are used by vehicle owners NOT OWNed by them, they stay the property of DVLA.

The DVLA have the right to recall a plate at any time, especially if the police request it.

(Go FACTCHECK that)

even if you bought it from DVLA/ref company, you ONLY get the right to display it on a vehicle and sell it on to another person.

I didn't put it on retention. So essentially that original plate goes back to the DVLA? What happens if I want to remove the private plate in the future and re-assign? I should have done a bit more investigationn methinks.

In the case of you wanting to take the existing plate off, the original plate goes back to the vehicle, unless you want a second private plate on it, bought by yourself. in the event you don't want a private plate on it anymore, the original plate goes back on. There is no retention fee for the original number. Only the £80.00 DVLA transfer fee every time you make a transfer.

As I understand it, the 'older' no longer need plate goes back into the DVLA 'pool' .

Now, if that plate is requested and sold to another person, it will not longer available to transfer back to the original vehicle.
DVLA will then assign you with an 'age related' plate from the 'pool'.

I think XKS 1 and OO10 OOO will go for big money. I’m surprised that J43 MES isn’t included. Maybe next time?

From experience, the original plate is "reserved" for that vehicle. For e.g, when the vehicle is sold on, 99% of the time the owner will retain his private number. the original number then goes back on to the vehicle.
From what I understand from this thread, the owner might sell on the original number, in which case the DVLA will issue an age related number for that vehicle, which will be non transferable.

Probably because it wasn’t an auction plate.

If I remember correctly CRA1G (poster here) captured the owner and held him hostage until he agreed to sign the plate over to him.laugh

About £4000 + £1200 Auction costs unless you get two Simon Smith’s battling to death over it! smile

I’m going by comparison with previous DVLA sales.

Thanks Hatson, would be a lovely plate for my son, his initials and year of birth - I'll keep an eye on it!
