A less than complementary review http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/07/20/istar_trek...
88% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.9/10 on IMDB. The majority of reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

deserves the good reviews IMO...
Star Trek Beyond. Good sci-fi adventure flickin the JJ reboot series with some lovely nods to ST the original series. A few things were not really well explained (or didn't bear much serious scrutiny) and do not watch this on your TV in the day time (when it comes out on home release) as there are considerable portions shot in darkness (a la GoT).
Score? Set phasers to stun

Deserving of good reviews, good fun story, some great effects (Yorktown is reminiscent of Ringworld, or Halo if you are a gamer, and is beautifully visualised). Some great tributes to the original series, particularly to Leonard Nimoy. It was quite sad to see Anton Yelchin on screen knowing that we won't see him again.
I think they underused Idris Elba. When he gets a chance to act he is very good, but that happens only briefly and as a bad guy he's disappointingly generic. On the upside Karl Urban as McCoy gets much more time on screen, he is really perfect for the part and has some really funny exchanges with Spock.
I watched the previous 2 films in the morning before going to see this and I think Into Darkness is the best of the three, but this does hold its own. the only thing I didn't really like was the motorbike stuff, jarred with me a bit, but only a small criticism. A must for Trek fans.

I can't wait to see it now. Going tomorrow at 12:15pm before my night shift!
I actually had a love hate relationship with Into Darkness, as for all the greatness throughout it ended it with its wrath of Kahn reboot ending and I wasn't feeling that. I wanted a fresh idea for an ending. But overall, still liked it!

Saw it tonight - reasonably good.....didn't blow my socks off.
I was a little disappointed at the very end though......
You only get a brief look at it - but I thought they would have given more of a nod to the previous incarnation of the Enterprise-A in the design of the new Enterprise. From what I could tell - it looked almost identical to the previous one, keeping the bubble fronted nacelles and the protruding deflector.

the motorbike stuff was jarring for being so obviously CG in places. Like the opening to Age of Ultron. The film was great though, thoroughly enjoyable watch.I think they underused Idris Elba. though they must get sick of rebuilding that bloody space ship!

The ship being built at the end is a new more advanced ship. They mentioned it was already under construction at Yorktown earlier in the movie - and must have been christened "Enterprise" due to the total destruction of the previous ship - hence why it had the -A designation. I just wish they had updated the design a bit more. I liked the way they took the TOS design and updated it for the reboot and would have liked to see them do the same for the TMP enterprise.
Saw it at the weekend, it was a pretty decent film but not brilliant. The action and most of the special effects were top notch and some of the characters are really coming into their own with Spock and Mccoy as real stand outs.
Now onto the weak bits, I'll spoiler these for those who haven't seen it yet.
1) Kirk's existential crisis, really why was this in here? The original never had or needed this, could you imagine Shatner willingly leaving the Enterprise behind? Felt like a forced thing to add "drama" to the proceedings but like Tom Cruise's existential crisis in most of his films, you knew it was all going to come good in the end.
2) Some of the effects were decidedly iffy for such a big budget film and the motorbike scenes, oh dear!
3) The Enterprise gets blown up YET AGAIN and they are stranded on a primitive planet YET AGAIN. This plot has been done to death. You can't really call it Star Trek if you keep loosing your ship every 5 minutes.
4) Carries on from 3, the threat\plot seemed a bit too small in scope. Oh and the villain's are spitting images of Jem'Hadar except they aren't Jem'Hadar. In such a big universe, I'm not really sure why they felt the need to copy an iconic alien design that's already been done. Smacks of lack of imagination.
Apart from that I enjoyed the film but it wasn't really THAT memorable with the plot, location and villain all conspiring to make the Trek universe seem very small when it's anything but.
7/10 for me.

An amiable little film. Plot was OK but bit more banter, just a tad more. Though the necklace banter got a good few titters from around the audience.
But, leaps and bounds with Yorktown, too far advanced or needed for the plot. Dunno.
I would get the box set when it is available (after the next one) and play this again.
