RE: Honda Civic Type R vs. Megane RS 275 Cup-S
Discussion
Sounds like if you could combine the best bits of both you'd have true modern classic. But add value into the equation and the Megane must be the clear winner.
Its a shame for the civic, as a Type R should not be second best in terms of cornering adjustability or handling precision. But then it has been years since the Type R badge has lived up to its reputation anyway.
Nice detailed review.

They have diluted the TypeR package over the years and with each passing model IMO, as I can attest to (see username, I know the FN2 has a lot of detractors). I think they have tried to make the car a compromise and whilst that's no bad thing if they can make it appeal to a wider audience it's a shame for those of us who want something a bit wilder or on point when really pressing on. I have driven an FK2 though and whilst it might lack the last bit of feedback or precision when pressing on it is still an amazing machine that you can cover ground in very quickly indeed, amazing stuff for an FWD motor. Its a shame for the civic, as a Type R should not be second best in terms of cornering adjustability or handling precision. PS: Hi
Having various versions of both, I feel that the Civic is the better daily driver, due to it being more comfortable, and the power band more like a classic turbo'd car, with sodding great mid-range.
The Megane, is the more track focused, it's the one that pulls until the redline, the one that has all the expensive components bolted onto it, to make it fast. it's much firmer to drive day to day, but it's still perfectly comfortable, and works better when your going quicker. Slow speed ride is very firm, but once you're going, and giving it some, it comes alive.
It's the sort of car that if you drove it slowly, you would wonder what the fuss was about, but drive it hard, you'll never forget it.

This is the only place I've seen that really rates the new Type-R in reviews interestingly.
Define "rates", everywhere I have read about it has given it 4/5 stars, is that terrible in the grand scheme?Derek Chevalier said:

Great write up Dan, thanks for that!
I must assume I´m a bit of a fanboy from RenaultSport, had a Clio 197 for 3 years and after that followed a Megane 250 Cup, 3 years later a 265 Reb Bull Edition and now wait´s a last of the line 275 Cup-S with full options at my dealer for collecting (you see, a little bit of a fanboy).
Like the Civic, would love to drive one for a test, in black it looks good to me, but don´t like it in bonkers colours (did I mentioned I orderd the Cup-S in liquid yellow ).
My 265 had not 1 mayor problem in 3 years and 45.000 miles, was only at the dealership for the annually service.
Hope the new Megane RS would also be a drivers car and a bit more hardcore than a Golf, don´t like the new direction they had taken with the last Clio RS. A manual must be an option for that kind of car!
I´m, curious to find out how much the Ohlins, Cup 2 Tires and Akrapovic exhaust enrich the driving in my new car, a lap in the green hell is a must in this year

The Megane has been top of the tree for so long I'm amazed no other Manufacturer got close, the big concern (especially when you take the Clio into account) is are Renault are going to do Peugeot & mess up their Hot Hatch range.
You've not driven a 208 / 308 Peugeot Sport I take it? (or even an RCZ R, I know it's not a hot hatch but you get the point)I think having read that I'd still take the civic - the Megane looks so dull and outside of a track it doesn't seem you gain that much more for the compromise day to day over the civic which still manages to be a very practical 5 door hatchback. I would guess that is what Honda was aiming for as many people wouldn't be prepared to live with those last little compromises.

I never saw that one, I did see a car of the year 2015 article they ran though where it placed tenth - the only hot hatch above it was the Sub8 Leon thingy.

Just discovered recently that Evo voted the Leon Cupra Sub 8 as their track car of the year above the Megane cup trophy S RS 275 final edition thingamy. The Leon has had it's moments where the spot light sort of accidentally hit it but could it possibly be a better contender than the Type R? There seem to be a few track based back to back reviews where the drivers are surprised by the Leon.Although if different drivers/journalists do the articles different conclusions are a given I suppose, though I can't comment on who actually wrote the two separate articles.
I really feel like I should own one of these RS Megane's at some point. My only issue is that it's a little bit small for a family of 4 even when just being relied upon as a second car. I have visions of us bobbing along a B road crammed in, kids feeling sick due to the small rear windows, boot crammed to the point the parcel shelf had to be left at home and me trying to convince a very unhappy wife that it wasn't a stupid purchase.

For 4 people it's fine. Recaro's rob quite a lot of rear legroom, and have solid backs, so it may be worth getting one without them fitted. Windows are small, and high up. Best advice I can offer is to take one out. There's a silver one, on 19's without Recaros in City Motors Bristol which is worth a look.I really feel like I should own one of these RS Megane's at some point. The Megane is ace and an impressive car to drive but I'd choose the Civic personally, I looked at buying one but my girlfriend was laid off whilst I was speaking to the garage about figures ETC so I didn't dare sign myself up to the tick whilst her work situation was uncertain, she's back in work though so I may have to resume my long winded attempts at signing myself up! I'm crap at buying cars, I'll ponder it for ages, it's not that I'm a tight wad, it's more that I like to research every last detail and I'll umm and arr about the tiniest details for days on end.
My only gripe is the engine, it's not the standout star of the show like it is in the older fast Hondas, don't get me wrong it's a good engine and probably one of the better turbo four pots I have driven but it's just not "special" if you get me, the noise is a bit crap too, I wonder if spending some cash on an aftermarket exhaust would sort that? It is f'in rapid, though!
Speaking of its rivals I saw my first MK3 Focus RS on the way to work this morning, a white one, it looked very tall, probably not my cuppa tea. Then again I love the Civic, different strokes for different folks I guess!

My mistake, neither it was.http://jalopnik.com/evo-crowned-their-new-track-ca...
Meaden does draw a lot of comparisons between the 2 during his drive at around 4.50 in the video (mentions the civic as well). It's also the ultimate sub 8 which means it's got no aircon but it does put in a time only 2 tenths slower than the "stripped out 275 trophy R" not sure what car that actually is, I find the megane variants very confusing.
