I do this every day and it just doesn't compute in their minds that they gain nothing other than a tiny adrenaline rush.
You're right and perhaps with age, that mindset is easier to adopt. I dont really seem to enjoy pootling along at a leisurely pace really. i don't know why, but it annoys me beyond all reason when you get the financed 1 series brigade pushing past, I do enjoy having a bit of power on tap - sad, maybe! It's nothing to do with getting to the destination quicker 9 times out of 10.

The thing is I expect if I had something slow and crap for the boring work miles it might encourage me to use my p&j a bit more and I would probably enjoy it a lot more too.

Possibly going to see a 1.8 avensis today which no doubt could be run in to the ground over a period of years requiring pennies spent for each MOT, ideal shed really but again, the power isn't there. Looking forward to seeing how it drives.

I do care, it's the most annoying thing having some arrogant twunt in a leased diesel barging you out of the way. And it happens a lot in small cars, I've been driving my mums 1.2 corsa for the last week and I'm already sick of it getting zero respect on the road, dangerous overtakes by other cars when if I was in a 3 series doing the same speed they wouldn't even bother over taking...

I see what you mean and it does make shed finding a lot more difficult, I suppose the spirit of running sheds is just to buy anything as long as it's cheap and roadworthy and drive it till it dies, being too specific limits the search somewhat.

Bikes aren't my thing but there's plenty around for next to nothing, you're right!
Your always going to get someone with a faster or car or even a slower car but the drivers prepared to break the speed limit by a higher degree , chill out a bit what difference does it make if mr rep in his leased audi diesel overtakes you ?
hat ever you get you have to prepared to get rid of it when the big bill arives otherwise you end up tied to it and may as well lease something for £100 month.

It doesn't make any difference and it's not like you'll see the person again, it's all just pathetic oneupmanship or a weird sense of satisfaction I suppose - I don't know, but I'm sure a lot of people if they were honest don't like being dicked by an estate agent in a 1 series who thinks he's the dogs! It's all very silly I know, but at least I'm being honest! Aside from that, power is just a nice and satisfying thing to have and use, but I need to remind myself I have the other car for that and weekends to enjoy it instead of racing to and from work for no reason during the week incurring extra costs.

Knowing when to let go would be easy for me as I like a change anyway.. But the Avensis I'm seeing today would probably be stubborn and not break if my girlfriends Toyota is anything to go by.

Fair enough. I must say that I don't get bothered by the generic VAG/BMW bullying past, then booting it off to get stuck behind another queue of traffic. To each their own.

It sound pathetic.

But if you want something quick see if you can find a saab 9-5 aero , beware they they can hide faults if they haven't been run on fully synthetic oil and had the sump strainer cleaned.

I got mine for £500 drove it from plymouth -somerset and use it daily however at some point the big ends been replaced , at tick over it has a oil flow fault , and diff is noisy so i use it daily and when it breaks it goes.

For a grand i'd also look at a renault 182 , on b roads they more than hold there own , on motorways you need to use the rev range but there a pretty simple car and bits are cheap just make sure you get one with recent history of a cambelt change and that the clutch feels pretty healthy.

Picked this up a few months back, slightly more pricy than others at £650 but it's firmly in shed territory.

60 in 9 seconds and 42mpg. Not a speck of rust.

Fitted new pads and disks but so far no issues and I did a 400 mile work trip and got 45p per mile which accounted for about a third of it's value!

Love shedding!

It is satisfying winning a traffic light Grand Prix, for about 5 seconds.

It's satisfying running and owning a car that cost £500 and does the same job as one that costs £500 per month. It's satisfying for a lot longer than 5 seconds and all the money saved can be spent on having a life instead of paying for a car to annoy or impress strangers with!

Yes the wheels on the zx are from a saxo vtr/vts. I have the original wheels and as soon as I can fin=d the correct wheel trims at a sensible price they will be going back on it.

It is funny this shedding lark. When I was 21 I wanted a tvr but couldn't afford it so I got an mx5 instead which cost 3k and which I still own. Now I'm ten years older I could go and buy that tvr comfortably but I've decided to put doing up the house, building up my pension and going on nice holidays above having a 30k car.

It's hard to know where or when it'll end, because shedding is addictive. Whether I'll keep shedding for the rest of my days or crack and spend a few k on something a bit newer or flashier who knows.

Bought a Saxo 1.1 for £250 as a stop-gap car while my BMW was resprayed.

That was 11 months ago!

The Saxo has needed a clutch, a backbox and an oil change but has still represented very cheap motoring with £420 spent for 7,000 miles.

It's nice to be reminded how fun small hatches used to be before they were corrupted by safety / driver aids. I drive it on it's door handles but it still does 46mpg.

I did a little health check yesterday, I got my feeler gauges out to re-gap the plugs but they were perfect and a Gates timing belt has been fitted at some point so I do st least know it's not on its original timing belt.

Careful. I fell into the same trap with a 2006 MK3 Mondeo, bought it in 2013 as a short term car, did some basic work to bring it up to scratch (mainly changing the tyres for ones that work in the wet) and kept it for ages as it just worked so well.

Then, when it came time to part with it and I realised I'd probably get about £1,000 for it, I ended up letting my parents use it as a car for going to the supermarket. I thought that was the end of my involvement with it.

Since then I've been through two more cars and the last one was such a disaster that I've ended up BACK in my old Mondeo full time whilst I recover financially!

At this rate I'm not sure I'll EVER get rid of it lol

The leased German diesel brigade does get on my nerves in a small hatch. In my Subaru Outback doing 60 along the A69, no problems. Safe gap, and for the most part they would only overtake when it was safe to do so.

106, same speed, same road, either the 106 has a very good mirror or they're so far up my arse I can make out the colour of their eyes, before shooting past narrowly avoiding an oncoming HGV. I try to just ignore it, takes some getting used to though.

That's pretty decent performance. Don't know much about the C2 - is it a VTR?

Got to admit current car is my least favourite owned compared to the hot hatches I've always owned.
But I've kept it far longer than any other car.
Bought it 6 years ago to replace my Alfa 147 in the short term but I've got to a stage where I can't be arsed with cars and moved onto bikes.

I reckon it will last years. Failed 1 Mot ever this summer due to the drum brakes needed a service costing me £20.

I LOVE bangernomics but it just occurred to me that all of my driving career I've been inadvertently adhering to the rules of bangernomics. It never used to have a name, it just used to be people buying cars at the lowest end of the market, prepared to fix them, and not prepared to spend money on brand new or even nearly new cars.

When I I was 17, my first car was £450 Peugeot 309 XE and the most money I have EVER spent on a car was my most recent purchase, a Saab 9-5 Aero at £1595 for family duties.

Im currently enjoying my £200 shed. It gets 8mpg, has a v8, is loud enough to wake the dead due to me cutting off both back boxes, has the classic E38 shimmy and other than a leaky water pump which was fixed with tigerseal it has cost me nothing in 3000 miles. Total spend including the wheels + car + mot is just about £500.

Bangernomics has been around as a word for more than any 20 years. I'm guessing that if you are of an age to be getting a 309 at 17 for £450 then you are under 40, because if you were any older then a 309 was too new a car when you were 17 to be popping up at £450. I'd therefore guess that the word predates your use of the practice.

Wasn't aware of the term when I was younger, would love to see some evidence for this. The term banger was used but bangernomics? I'd take an educated guess that the word has come about through Internet forums, so please enlighten me.
