Sounds like you've had some good ones, Farmer Geddon. I think soon I will be looking for a shed van (Vauxhall Combo/similar)

I love it, I paid £3800 for my e39 in 2008 and always ran that (reliable pretty much all the time for 8 years)

So though i had something nice and higher value to smoke about in (back then at least!) i was beyond jealous of my mate who was doing 8 bangers a year, He would appear in e36's mx5's ratty e30's MR2's Mazda 323's i used to pore over them all when he pulled up and have a good nosey round.

I couldnt afford to insure two cars till i hit 25 so a couple of shed's was not an option.
Since my 25th ive been banger obsessed its not a poverty thing its a lifestyle choice thumbup

This is what im smoking about in at the minute cost me £600 ran it up cleethorpes last night and dumped it in the carpark, Its got a tapedeck so i got some bunnymen tapes to roll in it with.
Gave it a good 3am blast on the way home though

Just the giffery smell and the heady exhaust blow id pay £600 for one hit of that wink

Mmmm and the number plate says "Giblet" which seems appropriate smile

My mighty Saab 9-5 is my train station steed except I tend to drive it almost everywhere as it's the easiest to get out. Paid £1700 as it had low mileage and FSSH, put it in for a service and told the indie to "sort it". Got a bill for £1200 inc a new turbo. So I spent £2900 on a car worth £500. I'm not very good at Bangernomics, still got the car though and now thinking of asking my friendly smart repair man to sort out the paint imperfections.

Amazingly, we also checked my father in law's first car, a 60's Morris Minor. It has changed colour, but still runs to this day!

We use these at work and they are pretty durable and reliable.

I'll ask next time I see him, I remember it being a different colour to when he owned it.

Well I Hit a deer ( or doe, not sure which) tonight with my banger in forest, the little fu,cker just jumped in front of me frown glad I was able to break hard enough not to hit him at higher speed, just a very small scratch on front bumper which I think will buff out, but the deer is a goner and I have about 40-50kg of deer to skin now, hehee.

If I would have done it with a brand new car I would be sweating balls due to very small scratch , but now I got loads of free meat! Kinda excited actually,
Inb4 I'm a poacher..

Lets start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When you read yo begin with A-B-C
When you sing you begin with DO-RE-MI
Child: do re mi
DO RE MI...
The first three notes just happen to be: DO-RE-MI
CHild: do re mi...
DO-RE-MI-FA-SOL-LA-TI...
Oh let me see if I can make it easier

Some people on the barge thread are *well* out of the realms of bangernomics! There are some nice cars on there, but keeping a sophisticated old 7-series or S-class in mint condition requires advanced spannering skills and/or deep pockets.

Yep!

I took a Saxo VTR from a clean state at 65,000 miles, all the way to 134,000 in just 2 years. The thing never missed a beat! Until the alternator stopped working. £20 off a scrapyard to fix!

The brakes got to a state that they basically did nothing, however.

The engine bay looked rusted from inside out.

The rear tyres were STILL the originals from when I bought the car (Michelin's) with 4mm+ tread on after I had done that astronomical mileage. I've genuinely never seen anything like it. I guess because there is no weight on the rear axle at all? Hilarious.

Paid for some wipers, serviced it myself (only oil) now and again. Tightened up the spark plugs now and again.

Rear axle looked as though it had collapsed or on its way out.

Great little cars IMO, even did a real world 48-50 MPG on my motorway journeys. You can pick them up even cheaper now too, my vote is the Saxo VTR!!

Ha, didn't know you were in this thread Dean!

Bangernomics here too, although I don't class them as bangers.

I paid far too much for my first 2 cars. a 206 2.0HDI which was a high mileage wreck for £1k, and a Puma for £1k that rusted away in 2 years.

Lesson learned.

Citroen ZX 1.4 - £350, bought from the first owner with a fkton of history

Did 25k with just some oil changes, a rear brake cylinder and some part worn tyres. Drivers door lock froze in the winter, so needed either a good kicking or a kettle full of boiling water to open.

Sold that for £100 with the rotten exhaust in the back seats to buy an XM for £600!

Which was epic! Again, didnt cost much. Brake pads, Hydraflush and LHM, tyres, coolant hose once. Did 10k in that, but had to get rid of it as it was the 2.0 tct with an auto box, and I couldnt afford to put fuel in it when we moved further away from where I work.

So I bought a ZX 1.9td (which is the one Dean bough for £50 further up the page!), and in the above picture

£350 with 264k miles on. Took it up to 291k, I went a bit mad on it and changed the rear bushes, front droplinks, lower balljoint, track rod ends, brand new rainexperts all round, new exhaust and backbox, regular oil changes etc, but probably spent £600 over the 3 years I had it including the purchase price and MOT's. Sold that to dean for £50 as the cv joints were moody and the gaitors split, inner driveshaft bearing a bit grumbly, the steering column UJ had done a citroen and frankly I was just bored.

So on Sunday I bought my current car, a Xantia Estate! And delivered the ZX to Dean as above as he was on the way, and it was much easier to get £50 for it to someone who wanted a fun project than try and gumtree it for £150 with the miles it had on! It owed me nothing, £300 for 3 years of never failing to get me to work and back is good value in my eyes

£250 (payable in £50 monthly installments too!), low miles at 129k. A rust hole in the rear door jamb, needs some LHM love, and the height correctors removing and cleaning, but she's like a Limo compared the the ZX! Has also had the boost and fuel turned up on the 1.9td engine, and a non cat non backbox straight through exhaust fitted (which, although it's a hoot to drive, will come off as it's a bit much, and I am slightly worried about the MOT...)

Long live cheap chod!

Yes, that is true. The snotter thread is possible a better example.

I loved having a cheap runabout car, started with my wifes daihatsu charade 1.3 16v which was a cracking car for about £700, think it was sold for the same amount a year later having had no work done on it. This was followed by a 10yr old micra, again £800, that got abused for 3 years, no parts replaced and sold as spares/repairs when it needed a bit of welding.

The best banger I've had followed, a mazda 323 v6 for £500, 90k on the clock. Had it 4 or 5 years. All electrics worked, never got serviced, no oil changes etc, worked perfectly. Got redlined almost every time it was taken on a journey. Ended it's life when we used it on a charity rally. Still worked but got auctioned off.

I miss having a banger, do keep looking.

Bought this for a banger money €1000 ( £850) some 4years ago, got some new tyres for it, spark plugs and a few hours every now and then just doing a basic maintenence and hasn't really asked for anything much more. I have learned so much by just working on the car when I have nothing else to do, best of all- I don't need to worry if I fuk something up as I know it was only 1k to buy.

Splurged yday on it, and bought around 6eur worth (200grams) of Polishing compound, took my sander+ pad and few hours of work made it look few years newer.

I'm still enjoying bangernomics.

Recently bought a 2003 Xsara Picasso 2.0 HDi SX with 102k miles for £350

Bloke lived (literally) round the corner too, so that added to the convenience.

The A/C doesn't (and wont) work and it's got a few scuffs but..i'm happy! The bangernomics continues.

(Very jealous of the ZX's posted above - I had 2, both Aura 1.9TDs - great cars, lovely to drive and great mix of performance and economy! I'd love another one but there are so few around now!

Thread revival, but thought it would be interesting to see who still "bangernomics" in 2022?...

Yes the current used car prices are silly for the time being but you can still get good <1000 cars.

I ventured into "bangernomics" this year, got myself a 2009 MINI R56 model, for £800, couldn't be happier and with is dented and rough exterior, I even love it's rusty OEM steel wheels - put £300 into it to get it running perfect and 3,000 miles in all good...(3,000 miles more added to it's already 140,000 miles under it)

It's mixing with the lease brigade daily on my commute doing exactly the same mundane A-B driving they are, most probably don't think it's a shed, nice putting my money elsewhere for now. Should of done it years ago, isn't hindsight a great thing.

Happy bangernomics guys and girls!

Yup, trusty sheddy Merc estate now has official moon mileage.

The company car opt out allowance over the years has ensured my summer fun car has done plenty of track days and wanted for absolutely nothing hehe

My Rover 75 V6 is twenty years old this year. Just had a new engine after the old one goosed a connecting rod at 100,000 miles but in current climate of used car prices that was cheaper than getting another similar car. Aside from fuel, it costs peanuts to run (normally) and I paid a grand for it ten years ago so it owes me nothing and I owe it to keep going as long as I can still find people willing to service it.
